Mouth Guard when lifting

So I was at the dentist today and he is recommending I wear a mouth guard when lifting. Says I'm a clenched and its damaging my back teeth and jaw joint. Anyone else have this issue? Getting a great jaw pump isn't exactly what I'm after in the gym and dental work is costly.

I would imagine if you're clenching when you lift you are more than likely clenching/grinding at night while you're sleeping. You can get a "stress guard" at pretty much any pharmacy or Walmart/target. Clenching is usually a hard wired habit so it's very hard to stop the habit. (Caused or worsened by stress) Wearing something while you're sleeping will help prevent damage though. Your dentist could even make you a night guard or splint if things get to that point. They usually cost $500-1,000.?

I do clench when I sleep too. I'm just waiting to find out if my benefits will cover a mouth guard before I decide which one to buy.

I wouldn't worry about when you're lifting. The majority of the damage happens the 6-8 hrs you're sleeping vs the 1-2 hrs you're lifting. I would just start with the <$10 stress guard and see how that helps. You just need something to cover your teeth.

Actually there was studies done I believe I originally found this article in a musclemag a couple years ago that clenching when you lift was found to be beneficial in giving you a little extra push when your doing your sets and so fourth, I always have done that and its just another part of locking all my muscles for full effect on the positive end of a rep, the problem outside of that I don't experience though I hear a lot of people get special mouth guards for when they sleep and so fourth, hope you get it all figured out!
