Minor Lower back pain

Hey all! Long time lurker of these forums, have read a lot of good information on these boards so i figured i'd make an account and see if I couldn't get some solid advice.

I'm 19, 5'8" and 180lbs. Recently I've developed some minor lower back pain, it became appearent as I was digging holes today (to plant some trees lol). When i would bend over/move/stomp down on the shovel sometimes I would get a small "jolt" of pain. It didn't feel like muscle pain, felt like it might be disc/nerve/cartilage damage. I can't describe how it felt, but it was a very peculiar type of pain. definitely not a muscle. If it means anything the pain did radiate slightly into my leg. It "clicked" at one point and just feels... weird.

With that said, the pain is very minor. It doesn't hurt at all at this time unless i bring my pelvic area forward and press my lower back inward and down towards my glutes (if you can imagine what I'm trying to describe), or when i bend over and turn in a certain way. Even then it doesn't hurt every time, only when i hit some random angles. then i will get that same small "jolt".

I suspect I initially injured it yesterday from doing barbell calf raises (i use 90lbs over my 5rep squat weight, has been helping me psychologically w/ squats). The lower back twitched every so slightly while doing them and i could feel it strain a bit. The pain left shortly after and did not resurface until today when i undoubtedly reaggravated it shoveling all sorts of earthen material.

Safe to say I will no longer be doing heavy raises whatsoever.

Does anyone have experience with lower back pain? Even though its minor and doesn't hurt at all now I'm very worried, because it was definitely not muscle pain. I can't describe the weird feeling that came along with the pain, but i suspect those of you who have had disc/nerve/cartilage injuries in the lower back will know what I mean.

Just want to know what I can do to further strengthen lower back, and how long I should take off from [squats, deadlifts, bent-over rows, etc.] to make sure that I don't hurt it anymore than i may have already. I want to nip it in the bud!
