Hughes would get killed, are you kidding? Arona had a lot of trouble taking Wandy down. Arona is bigger and better at everything then Hughes. I can't believe people think Hughes is that good, its as if the Hughes/Gracie fight is the first MMA match they've ever seen. Someone on here was saying how Hughes would do well in Open Weight Pride. Thats ridiculous, there are probably 20 guys in Pride that would manhandle him.
I would really appreciate it if people would get off Hughes' nuts. He's a great fighter at 170, would do decent at 185, but 205 and HW are out of his league. I'd really like to see him fight Franklin, I think Franklin would own him.
Yes, he would get KILLED. I mean, it wouldn't even be competitive, would it? And yes, he would get MANHANDLED in Pride like a ragdoll, right?
Wow, that's pretty dramatic stuff.
You know, I bet Wandy would just blow on Hughes and he'd fall over. That's how tough Wandy is, man!
I love how people act like MMA is a precise science and they have all the answers. If there's one thing that we KNOW is true about MMA is that it's not a precise science, and just when you think you know what's going to happen, something else happens. One minute a fighter is caught in a submission and it looks like it's over, and in the blink of an eye, there's an escape and a complete reversal of the fight takes place.
And one thing that Royce Gracie taught us is that you can't look at two fighters and determine the outcome of a fight. One fighter may have a significant weight or strength advantage but the other fighter's skills are great enough to overcome the discrepancy.
I never said that Hughes would win a Pride OWGP. I never even said he'd make it to the finals. I simply said I thought he'd be pretty competitive, winning a fight or two, who knows. Is he the only one from the UFC who I think would be competitive, no, but the context of the conversation was Matt Hughes so naturally that's who I was talking about at the time.
And I never said Hughes would beat Wanderlei, I simply said I think he would have a fairly good chance, assuming he has a good gameplan and is able to execute it.
That's not Hughes nut-hugging, it's just recognizing the possibilities.
MMA is more than just two guys going into a ring and slugging it out. It's also a chess match with a LOT of variables, including strength, weight, takedowns, boxing, kicks, submissions, and so forth. More often than not, it's the guy who controls most of the variables that is going to win. We can guess who that will be but we won't know for sure until they actually go at it, and until then, we have to recognize that just about anything is possible.
