Low test 22yo - could it be diet related?

Got tested and I have low test 6-8 and normal is 10-30

Endorcrineolgist is doing more tests, then seems to be hinting at TRT but being 22 I dont really fancy that.

Im wondering if my high protein moderate carb/fat diet could be lowering my test? average macros
250g pro
300g cho
60g fat

Thinking of increasing fat intake to 80g, lowering protein to 180g and carbs to 360g

Read some articles suggesting high protein can lower test, and that a 2:1 ratio can aid test (carb/protein)

I know there could be a lot of other things effecting my test, but I thought that could be one, alsongside inflamation (train high instensity high volume, probs overtraining at times) or adrenal fatigue?

Id rather find the problem than mask it with TRT as i dont drink and eat healthy i doubt theres anything underlying seriously...

Any help would be appreciated

Some doctors might run a nutrient panel to see if you have any vitamin deficiencies that could contribute to low test. Many will put you on Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 to see if that helps raise your test.

Could also be just a bad test. I've tested in the 200's while sick with the flu and after a year or so retested at 650. Either way I'd still prefer to be on TRT (if you can find a doc who prescribes liberal doses), but you just have to weight the risks and gains and go from there. Read up on TRT and the effects of testosterone.

Overtraining can also cause problems with test. Next time try dialing back your training in the days/weeks leading up to your bloodwork.

i'm in a similar boat actually. 22, and i have hypothyroidism, but had a full hormone panel and it showed low T (200, scale of 300-1100). Granted this was at the end of a cut getting down to 6-7% BF, and my fat intake from my coach dwindled below 45g at it's lowest. Waaaaaay to low. Now I'm in the 65g range and I'm feeling much better. Getting blood work done in January, but still a ****ty situation when you're 22 and libido is pretty low

overtraining and other factors can effect the test, and probably effected mine. i know before i go for my blood draw i'm going to take two days off so i'm good to go before hand. not trying to go on TRT either.

what were your LH, FSH, e2 and Prolactin levels too? Those all play a role

Yeh I do wonder if diet + training is playing a factor, but the head injury from younger years is most likely to be the cause id imagine, havnt had TSH/Lsh tested yet to see if its pituatory related or testes related...

Thinking of doing the thyroid test myself to see if temperatures are low which i suspect are...

Iv also read high protein can lower test, but by how much im not sure, my diet does tend to be lower fat too 50-60g.

Jesus lol we're so similar. I had a head Injury when I was younger to . I fractured my skull in a car accident and had to get an MRI just recently on my pituitary but its normal

Ever since I upped fats and incorporated more rest, I've been feeling better. Didn't get ****ty over night so I don't expect it to get better overnight

My temps have finally been increasing too. I was as low as a 95 waking temperature.

I'd definitely up your fats and incorporate more rest . As for the protein, I'm not sure if it effects test levels but I'd lower it for more carbs, but I love carbs lol

haha thats so funny! there doing an MRI on my pituitory too!

Yeh im going to up fats and rest more, have you seen the iodine solution for thyroid on here? tried it atall?

Im guessing your trying to fix it all naturally then without meds?

i've been reading the iodine / thyroid stickies over at T-Nation ever since this all started. I started adding more iodized salt. I'm on Synthroid now (only 50 mcg, prob need to up it a bit more) but i dont think the thyroid problem came from training / diet since it runs in my family.

and yeah, doctor told me in january if there's no improvement, an HCG restart. but also said he wouldn't give me an AI...and told me that whey protein has androgens and is the cause of my lower test. also said dietary fat plays no role in hormone function... so i'm scared of him but he's my only option for months

yeh thats fair enough, any improvment with iodinzed salt? what is Synthroid?

Is HCG to restart the test or throid TSH production? (im still in the early learning stage at the moment...)

Sounds unfortunate about your doctors beliefs :/ can you not switch? whats his reason for no AI? surely HCG has an estro rebound? still he hasnt advised TRT?

My doc seemed fairly keen on TRT saying 'if the results come back low we will get TRT lined up...' which worried me slightly too id rather find the route cause first

Synthroid is synthetic T4. Helps the thyroid come back to normal almost. There's T3 and T4, synthroid / t4 is what's usually prescribed and it'll convert to T3

HCG would be to restart test if need be . But i do feel 10x better so I doubt I'll need it, just more time. From my understanding hcg mimics lh/FSH and basically tells the testes to produce testosterone

Didn't give me a reason for an AI but there's a zero percent chance I'll go through with it if he doesn't prescribe me one, not risking gyno and all the other issues. Can't switch unfortuantely unless I wait to be seen in April of next year for a different Dr, I only got this guy because someone canceled.

As for TRT I'd definitely try to find the root cause first. TRT is for life so that's a big step. He mentioned trt but said he's very uncomfortable prescribing trt to anyone below 25

Such a smart thread guys. Glad to see you digging in and not jumping on TRT.

thanks man, yeah i saw the blood test in August, Dr. in Sept, and now following up with him in January. He wanted to me to stop all supplements (understand, in case of prohormones, etc) and avoid whey protein.... "because whey protein contains androgens". literally could not believe my ears lol

it's frustrating cause, idk it sucks. 22, low libido, lethargy some days, etc. last thing i want to do is go on TRT, so we'll see if i feel better/normal in January. if not, then probably an HcG restart.

yeh sounds sensible... although i dont get the whey thing? if my doc told me that id continue to take it regardless... tastes too good haha! and im sure it wouldnt be that big a factor in lowering test...

keep me updated mate. Iv got bloods wednesday and thursday then consultation/results dec 3rd. Ill update thread with news
