Killn' The Cube: My powerlifting venture begins

Here is the front squat video:

Looks a little high. I'm not too upset by it though, I had more in the tank, IMO. A 30lb PR is enough for me.

I'll get some volume in tmrw. Back to back squat days FTW!

Agree with this. I'm sure now that your getting used to this weight in this movement you could hit depth on it soon enough.

I need to get used to depth in these new shoes. My partner kept telling me I was below depth, too. On top of that, I haven't done ANY mobility in well over a month. Yippee.

I personally feel that you don't have to "sit back" as hard in Oly shoes. When I try to each back with my hips, I miss depth.

Yeah, I need to accumulate some time with them to find it. I'm trying to learn how to bottom out at parallel in them. I'm going to need to start taking videos again to help find it.

Today:

Squat:
275x8
315x5
365x5

Deadlift:
405x1x5
455x1x3
495x1x3

Reverse hyper:
50x12
100x12
150x12x2

Calves: DC

Not a bad day considering I maxed my front squat yesterday. 365 felt pretty light, I had more reps in me. I can tell I'm a lot stronger.

Deadlift I tried over/under for the first time in like 6 weeks. Just trying to get comfortable with it again.

Westside: week 10- ME upper

Pin press:
225x6
275x3
295x1
315x1

Grind city, letting the weight stop completely into dead weight is no joke.

Pause bench (2 chains-no idea their weight):
135x10
185x5
225x5
Add slingshot
275x3

The last set is the most weight I've ever had in my hands. It was definitely 345 or above w/ the chains.

Bench w/ tear drop plates:
85x12
125x12
165x12x2

^phucking brutal. Those weird ass plates forged at the dawn of time are challenging.

Rolling DB triceps extensions: 35x12x3

Pull-ups: BWx5x4- bicep felt iffy

NG pull-downs: 10x4

Reverse fly: 12x3

Preacher cable curl: a lot of slow TUT reps

Solid day. Bench is feeling good. I need to get stronger.

Stay on those pin presses, man. They are money. How's your butt do on the benches in the new gym?

I definitely will man, they're tuff when you do them correctly. These benches are the balls. My ass doesn't come off at all anymore.

Thanks man, ever since I tweaked my bench programming I have been getting stronger.

This was my last heavy day before maxes, BTW. Then I'm restarting the same program for the fourth time. I'm still loving it.

Westside: DE lower:

Cambered bar squat:
245x2x3
295x2x3

DE deadlift: let's just say a lot. 405 moved pretty slow, though. Readjusting to DL'ing again.

KB lunges: 20x3

Tire flip:
250# x10x3
600x1x2

600# tire was phucking HEAVY. I need to improve my technique.

I miss tire flips. I will probably add them in on conditioning days now. One of my clients randomly informed me that he found some on a local high school practice field...so I have to go check out how big they are.

Hell yeah, Bolt. Check them out. I'm going to be implementing them twice a week at least. Hell, I didn't even know we had them until yesterday and there's 10 of them.

I swear, almost anything you can think of that a gym needs, my gym has 3 different kinds.

Westside: DE upper

DE bench:
155+short light bands x3x3
235 straight weight x3x3

OHP (pause on collar bone)
135x10x2 (difficult)

Cable side laterals SS banded press-downs:
10/25x3

Sled pull with arms:
100# x25ydsx2
200#x25ydsx4

Cable row w/ fancy attachment: 15x3

NG pull-downs: 12x3 (slow)

Reverse fly: 20x3

Cable preacher curl: 15x3

KB curl: 12x3

Cable crunch: 15x3

Knee raises: 12x3

Stationary bike: 13 min

Solid ass day. I really liked pulling the sled w/ upper body.

Hummer tire deadlift? Super axle?!

No to the first one. Possibly on the second. I'm not sure what a super axle looks like, but we have a few different axle's.

There used to be a lot of strongman equipment, but another guy opened a gym 45min away and bought most of the equipment off our owner. But, he closed down his gym and is selling it back.

I swear though, if any of you guys ever come to the Cincinnati area, this gym is the best one short of Elite and Westside. My gym owner is really good friends with Louie and his wife, I'm trying to get him to talk to Louie so I can train there for a day.

Most should be about 2", the real awesome part are the hubs. I haven't met anyone that goes to a gym that has those.

Why are the hubs more desirable? Sounds like they would be a pain in the ass to unbolt and bolt back on.

Or is the hub desirable because it eliminates the weights from spinning?

Mostly just because that's what they use in WSM, and it doesn't bounce around like it does when you have tires.

Westside- Deload

Squat: 245x5x3

Deadlift: 415x1x6

GHR: BWx10x3

Farmer carries: 205/hand x50yds x6

Leg extensions SS calves: a lot

Getting ready for max day. Still getting accustomed to depth in the skwat shoes.

I keep wanting too especially the days I feel great but the more quality training I put in and the less max testing I do, the better I will perform come meet day. I've hit several rep PRs that are over 6, and for me I usually hit more than what I calc, at least on deads. I have patience though. My guys keep askin me when I'm gona do it.

Yeah, me and you have pretty dissimilar training styles. I couldn't imagine not hitting 1-3 rep maxes every week, lol. I do build up volume in supplemental and back-down sets, though.

I agree man, I think you got it. It's only a matter of when you try.

Deload- upper

Bench:
225x5x2
275x1
Add yellow slingshot
275x1

Swiss bar OHP:
115x10x3

Flies SS rope press-downs:
15/12x3

Pull sled w/ arms:
100# x25yds
200# x25yds x3

NG pull-downs:
15x3

Lat pull-over machine:
20x3

Spider curl:
80x12x3

One arm DB preacher curl: a lot

Good deload day. Bench is feeling stronger than ever.

One of the guys at my gym, who has a 2100# total, was telling me a lot of dirt on Westside and Louie. I found it pretty funny.

Lol. It's funny how everybody who knows how it is at the top of this game has something to say about everybody else who's at the top. Lot of secretive behavior. How did you like the yellow slingshot?

Haha, for real man. I just asked him what his total was and he runs off on a tangent about Louie, how he really makes his money, what he does for the WS guys and other ****.

According to him, Louie fixes meets, tells judges to give his guys a 2-3" squat variance for depth. Also, my gym ran a pro/am and he said Dave Hoff stuffed his shirt with towels.

Honestly, I didn't notice any difference except a 2XL is easier to fit in than the red one

Oh, I remember hearing about Hoff's shirt-gate. Just curious, I was under the impression yellow was stronger than red.

Ah, the infamous Hoff meet where he had knee wraps under his singlet. I wouldn't doubt that Louie influences the judges as only the Westside guys get that ridiculous leniency on squats.

Kind of sucks when it gets called a world record. I'd never say that to his face!

Outside of that one meet, his bench is freaking amazing. He doesn't do a soft lockout like a lot of geared guys and his 1000# was solid.

Yea he is ridiculously strong. I don't know enough about gear to know the skill curve, though. It'd be cool if he came back and hit the record parallel or below.

I get getting a little wiggle room at anything over a grand, but it doesn't even look like his hamstring is parallel with the hip much less the knee.

Exactly. At parallel okay, take the judges call bc he has to do it in the moment thinking about the lifters safety and making it legit, but his femur was angled way up unfortunately. I agree with you.

It's made out of the same material as the original, but the angled sleeve makes it touch your chest sooner so you do get more poundage out of it. I probably didn't notice anything because I only benched 275 with it.

Obviously I agree with you guys, Hoff's squat was not even close.

On another note: I have an extraordinary amount of schoolwork to do in the subsequent weeks. But, after these two weeks I only have one more semester. Then I start my career, whatever that may be. The next year is going to be as ambiguous as ever.

Does it fold less with the angled sleeves? That's the thing I always disliked about the SS vs the Ram.

I don't believe it folded like my red one does. But literally, I only have one rep in with it. I'm going to use it again next week. I'll let you know.
