Killn' The Cube: My powerlifting venture begins

Not your prettiest rep but you locked it out at least, man. You know what to fix next time. Good job

Thanks. Yeah, I know I can pull more weight if I put tension on the bar before I begin pulling. I knew right after I got it off the floor I did it wrong. At that point I just wanted the PR.

Are you military?

Cuz that is one super Hooah haircut you got there.

I plan on going to OCS pending my bachelors. I'm finding a new recruiter to iron out the details/make sure I'm eligible.

I went to a new barbershop and the lady started rambling about how she goes to camp lejune to cut Marines hair and the next thing I know I got a high and tight lol. Not what I asked for, but no big deal.

Congrats on the PR.

I'm thinking you need to get your upper back stronger to keep your hips from shooting.

Thanks. I've been working on that. I knew that was a weakness of mine, so I incorporated a back/bi day into the program.

thanked by napalm...

OCS might be worth it, enjoy pushing papers. donotwant.jpg

What If I thought he was an exceptional Seaman and wanted to anyways?

Sounds better than cleaning.. I've got to make sure I have the option. I'm not sure if the Marine's are as stringent on GPA's as other branches. My GPA isn't terrible, but lets say as a freshman and sophomore baseball player, I didn't go to college to play school. It's not much above a 3.00. I'll find another recruiter who's not a douche and find out.

If you aren't a grunt you wont clean as often anyway, because you'll have a job that actually needs to be done.

As opposed to your only job being to kill and shoot, which unfortunately cannot be done in garrison.

I want to go infantry. About went in January as a reservist. My recruiter lead me to believe I could go reserves, finish my degree, put in my OCS package, and assuming I passed that, I would be a 2nd LT. Thankfully I got ahold of some Marine's the day before I was suppose to sign.

Infantry is seriously downsizing right now, most of the guys in my old unit are barred from reenlistment unless they are Victor or Bravo4 qualified (ranger/sniper) because they just don't need e4s with parachutist badges.

And its only fun when were in war, which is also not happening frequently. (Deployments)

Yeah, I wouldn't even be guaranteed Infantry. I think you pick your top 7 or so choices and they choose it for you accordingly. So, sounds like I would have a slim chance at getting it. The only MOS's that intrigue me are; infantry, MP, artillery, armored assault, crash fire rescue, and maybe combat engineer.

My buddy just got deployed Thursday. He's going to South Korea, and Libya. He's an 0311, doubt he gets into much.

It depends on how well you do at OCS.

Word, I need to run. Sh1t.

Yes, and PLs are supposed to be fit as hell (at least they are in the 82nd) and keep in mind that is Army FIT not regular world fit.

2 mile run, 2 minute pushups, 2 minute situp.

You're supposed to be an example for your Joe's (my old PL was not, the new one they got is much better) and if you do go that route. DO NOT be the PL that thinks he's too good to work/show up when the guys do. We had to be in at 0545 and he would roll up around 0620 in civvies, dude never cleaned his weapon but expected us to have ours immaculate, and never came out of the office for anything.

Man, I can imagine how p1ssed off you'd be at that guy. I'm not perfect by any means, but I would never pull anything like that. Guess one slipped through the cracks at OCS. (Maybe It's called something different for Army).

Too bad the PFT doesn't consist of the squat, bench, and DL. I don't HATE running, but I love the big 3.

Don't quit lifting though, but make sure you can still perform above the Army standards (shoot for 300 every time if possible).

But yea, he was quite possibly the worst PL I've (and even some of the more experienced guys) have ever had.

Week 6: Back/bi

SG High pull:
135x6
155x6
165x5
185x2
135x5

First time trying these, so I just wanted to get a feel for them. I figured they'd be good for my upper back, man was I right. Nothing has hit my upper back/traps quite like these. Definitely going to keep them in the rotation.

DB Rows: 8x4- 85's

Cat-back lat pulls: 20x3- Heavy EFS band

Bent over reverse DB fly: 12x3- 25's

WG Pull-ups: 5x3- BW (squeeze and hold at top/slow negative)

Spider DB curl: 8x3- 35's

Banded EZ bar curl: 15x3

Calves: DC style

Foam rolling/static stretching

I was in my zone today, felt really good. Upper back is coming along. I hope the addition of the high pulls helps my squat and DL. Bench tmrw, hoping I can string together some good sessions.

Week 6: RE Bench

BB bench: 265x6

As I was warming up 225 felt heavy, so I opted for something I knew I could do. 265 was a bit too easy tho. I find with the faster negative I'm conserving much more energy and I'm exploding the bar up. Also, all reps were solid pauses.

1" off chest pause bench: 3x5- 225 (2-3 sec pause)

Incline BB:
155x12
165x12
175x12

Standing OHP:
95x8
115x8
125x8
135x8 (brutal)

Pec deck RP: 18/8/8- 165

Banded press-downs: 35x3- onx mini

No idea why I chose sets of 35 lol.

Great, timely workout. Only lasted 65 minutes, but I accomplished what I set out for. Only got 2 hrs of sleep last night, but it did not effect my workout what so ever. I'm going to take tmrw
Completely off to recover. Might just foam roll and stretch, I need to quit being a b1tch and get my mobility work in.

So, I've made the decision to change my training regimen after these last few weeks of The Cube. I'm going to be doing the juggernaut training method 2.0. Can't wait to murder these last few weeks of the cube and start something new.

Sweet! Haven't bought the e-book on that yet, so I'm excited to see what it's all about. No need to fill me in, I'll just be pleasantly surprised. I think Chad has a fantastic understanding of the human body and human performance.

Sounds like a good time and nice bench session man.

It used to be on scribd

Week 6: Day 3- Explosive Deadlift

Deadlift: 2x6- 295

Reverse band Dead: 5x5- 405

Suspended BB GM:
185x8x2
205x8

Oly squat: 8x3- 225

Toe's elevated SLDL:
135x12
185x12x2

Good workout today. Took longer than normal, but that's because I was pretty exhausted. Really hit a groove on deadlifts. Wish I had a video because these were the best reps of my life. Can't wait to use this technique w/ heavier weight. I have a feeling I'm going to PR big time.

Are u subscribed to JTS email and YouTube?

I am a huge fan of him. His seminars are great too. Should be a well thought out plan. I read version 1...little bit of a few different programs.

Look forward to it.

No, not yet. I've seen a bunch of their videos tho. I still have a lot to learn about the program, but I still have a few weeks of the cube left so I have enough time to enlighten myself. I'm for sure going to implement some of the conditioning aspects. I hate feeling out of shape.

Week 6- Body day

Seated DB military: 8x3- 70's

My pressing is finally improving. The addition of the extra day leaves me with more time on body day to really hammer my tri's and shoulders. I feel like that has really helped me. The 70's were actually a bit too light, but I'm benching heavy on Wed so I didn't want to beat myself up too bad.

CG bench w/ pause:
135x12
145x12
165x12

Again, was a bit too light.

Side lateral raise: 12x3- 25's

Rope press downs: 15x3- 100

SGHP: 5x3- 135

I just wanted to show my lifting partner these. My traps are still pretty sore, but I absolutely love this exercise.

Standing DB hammer curl: 8x3- 50's

Good session. Finished in about 50 minutes. My weight keeps climbing. Once I broke the 210 barrier I've been steadily packing on weight. My lower body is growing like crazy. I'm going to need to start purchasing bigger jeans, I've never been a fan of the skinny jean look, HA.

Week 7: RE Squat

Squat: 6x1- 315

315 was too light, could have gotten 2-4 more reps.

Front squat:
185x5
225x2
255x2x3

5" pause squat: 1x5- 225(15 sec between sets)

Unilateral leg press: 12x3- 100

Lying leg curls SS leg extensions: 15/15x3

Overall good workout. 315x6 is actually a PR for me, but I have more in me for sure. I'll upload the video in a bit.

Cube seems unanimously good for squating. Me, you, Sean, NOMZ, and other reviews I've seen. Interesting.

Solid work mang. Tons of skwatz :D

Now we're talkin! Congrats on the PR

Thanks fellas. Hopefully I'll be hitting 405 by max week. It's a goal I need to hit and I feel like its obtainable. The cube has definitely helped my squat more so than any other lift. My squat had the most room for improvement as well. On front squats I thought about trying to hit 315 for a single. Key word, thought..

Here's the video.

I need to be more cognitive of keeping my arch on rep sets. Once I lose it, my forward lean becomes more prevalent. All in all I'm satisfied.

They looked good man right at depth. 405 is definitely there.

Week 6: Heavy bench

Bench: 2x3
275x2
295x2
305x2

Solid bench work. 305 was a little too light for my final set. I have a video of it to upload.

DB incline: 12x3- 80's

Seated military BB: 5x5- 145

Pec deck (Rest Pause): 20/8/7+isometric hold

Straight bar press down: 20x3- 110

Good bench session. I still have small form adjustments to make. I've been focusing on where to put my feet for maximal leg drive. I been experimenting w/ putting my feet out wider so my a$$ doesn't come off the bench. I'll upload the video here in a bit.

Very nice work on the bench, bud! Looking forward to the vid.

Thanks dude. My bench is finally improving. The weight took a good hit once I started doing a legit pause, so it feels good.

My partner hit a huge PR today. He maxed at 295 at the end of cube run 1 and today he hit 305x2. Tweaking the program has helped us immensely.

You gotta find what works for you, and it's good to see that you did that.

That's awesome.

I think the program can be great for those that program well.

I could tuck more and I should have held the last rep instead of racking it so soon. Two big things I noticed

Quick note; not sure what fed you plan on competing in, but those presses would be DQ'd in the few I've been associated with. The heave & butt off the bench will get you red lighted.

I think you have the strength, I'd just keep an eye on being compliant w/your fed. Good work.

Thanks for checking it out. I had a feeling the butt lift was a problem. I need to find a way to use leg drive whilst keeping my a$$ on the bench.
