Jswain's training log for powerlifting

Just do a mild one like I did. I still drank 1 cup of coffee a day and some tea but no Preworkout caffeine

Going from 1.5G/day caffeine to 200mg isn't that mild...

LOL. Yeah im no where near that. Probably like 6-700. Its not really an extreme amount..ive just been taking that amount for quite a while.

Sleeping in felt great though. Im feeling really refreshed right now. I think i made the right choice by catching a few extra hours of sleep

Absolutely. Sleep is my best friend

lil extra sleep never killed dem gainz

Sleep is the best supplement. Besides food, of course.

I supplement my food with sleep lol

Totally agreed. It was definitely the best option today. Some last minute mobility would have been nice but hopefully that extra sleep pays dividends tomorrow.

I finally got off work so im going to put down these 2 thousand calories i have to get in, get some stretching in and relax.

Weighed in at 214 somehow. Brought a pop tart and a supreme protein bar to eat. Rules meeting at 1130. Lifting starts at 12 (an hour).

Destroy your lifts!

Hope you brought some foodz in with you.

Murdered 300 and 315. Went for 345 (lady talked me into trying to beat the ngpf junior 220 state record lol). Definitely shouldnt of jumped the gun on it. I got it off my chest but pushed back too hard and lost my groove badly.

Think i wouldve gotten 330-335. shoulda stuck to the plan.

Now gotta wait for the first deadlift flight to go. It is so damn hot in this place. Im already almost down a gallon of water. Eating trail mix and supreme protein bars.

A slingshot rep is here selling everything for wholesale. Just got a hammy band for 14$

Nice.

Just pulled 560.

Edit: finally got the damn videos to post. See the next page for the full meet update.

I can't see the video, but congrats on a strong performance!

Im home now so im gonna toy around with it a little more and see if i can figure it out. Girl that sent it to me somehow cant send videos through text so she had to email them to me and im having a hell of a time getting them to download properly apparently.

Just gonna post the video here. I'll edit this post and put my 3rd attempt fail here whenever i get it.

Todays summary:

Weighed @214
Juniors 220s

Bench:
1st- 300x1 easy
2nd- 315x1 pretty easy
3rd- 345xfail. It was stupid of me to let the lady talk me into this. I told her 335, but 315 felt pretty easy so i said why not.

Deads:
1st- 510lb
2nd-540 (i think, i dont really remember).
3rd- 560lb: 50lb PR. most i had ever pulled was 510x2@9. I think i may have had another 10 or 15lb in me. But we'll never know. Til next meet :).

Sean's post in his log got me thinking a bit more about it. How should i add in a second bench day to the cube, but also keep the overhead press? I dunno if i want it before or after. And what rep scheme to follow. Maybe i could just keep it an explosive day so that way i can still be decently fresh for OP afterward.

Do you do tricep work outside of bench day?

On the ohp bb day i had planned on it. But other than that no. Dl and squat day are all leg and back accessories.

So how about when you go to do this in the bodybuilding day just do some close grip bench as your tricep work? Kill two birds with one stone.

Just an idea

Before or after the op you think?

You know, I don't think it would make a huge difference either way, so if the 4th day has major emphasis on OHP then do that first and make CGB secondary. If it doesn't matter than just do it in the order that works best for you and allows you to perform best.

Same thoughts. In the long run it's splitting hairs

Thanks fellas. Will probably just go with OP (5/3/1 scheme) and CGBP second.

How much practicing did it take you to get where you could hook grip max pulls? And, is there anything specific you do to train your thumb/HG?

To be totally honest man...i've never really had a hard time with hook grip on anything less than 3 reps as long as my thumbs are chalked well enough. Ive got pretty big hands and longer thumbs so its pretty easy for me to dig my thumb in there and just wrap my middle and pointer finger around it. There was one warm up pull that my thumb burned a little after, but i just chalked it better the next time and it didnt hurt the rest of the meet.

Even when i first started experimenting with hook grip at the end of last year it wasnt ever really super painful for me. I dunno, maybe my thumbs are just naturally dead lol.

I wish i could tell you something that would help and had the magical secret to desensitizing the thumbs. But i dont. I could see how what duffin does would work (eg the hook holds and monkey holds in hook grip on a pullup bar). Id say spending as much time as you can in hook grip would help (within reason to where you arent doing more harm than good, obviously).

I guess I'll just have to work at it. My right hand, where I've broken several knuckles, I kinda have to manually position with my left hand.

Edit: seems Rob beat me to it! Great minds think alike. Close grip after your OHP is what I did. You could theoretically do comp grip. And I did my OHP day opposite of my bench day, so: heavy bench, speed OHP/CG. Speed bench, heavy OHP. And then rep week was reps for both.

Congrats on an awesome first meet! Great numbers!

Hmm alright...giving me something else to think about. I was thinking of doing 5/3/1 scheme OHP because my OHP was pretty decent when i was running 5/3/1. I dunno. Ive got some time to think about it today.

And thanks herder! I had no idea id pull 560 tbh. I know it was with a tx dl bar. Maybe that added a few lbs, but i dont know. I didnt even really have to struggle that hard to get it off the floor. Im still confused as to how not that hard (wouldn't day it was "easy") it was.

Yea just toy around with it man. Also, like herder was saying in your log in regards to grip, im sure the bar makes a huge difference too even for HG. The bar at my gym has a pretty aggressive knurl and it is borderline rusty so sometimes that can dig in and get a little uncomfortable. But, that texas dl bar at the meet yesterday was a beaut and there weren't any issues once i chalked up properly.

Nice work man! Its one hell of a feeling getting that first meet done huh

Absolutely. It was a heck of a lot of fun. Met some real cool people and saw some pretty heavy lifting from a few guys and two strong girls. One girl pulled 405 and just looked like an average girl. The other one does physique and crossfit and nearly had bigger arms than i did.

is it recommended to take a week off or can i just jump right in to cube week 1 tomorrow?

My right shoulder is the only thing that was a little stiff yesterday after the comp. Doesn't feel bad today. This isn't a heavy bench week either so i think i should be alright.
