Well ripped218, here is where our difference of opinion ends. :icon_lol:

You and I are in the same tent on this one.

I can't claim to know much about Royce's recent fighting history. The last time I saw him fight, I think he quit on his stool in a PRIDE match against Yoshida.

(If anyone saw that match, please feel free to correct me).

He was wearing a gi and he looked like he was about to pass out. I think Hughes will be in his usual great condition and I can't imagine that Royce will wear a gi for this match. I know there are one or two really, really, minor advantages to wearing a gi (sweat absorption for submission attempts, ability to choke with sleeves.. to name a couple) but the DISadvantages are numerous in most cases.

I think Hughes will handle him easily.

But don't forget.... I picked Arlovski over Sylvia! :run:

Cheers!

He doesn't have a choice. NO GI allowed in UFC.

Royce is going to get murdered!

Oops! Forgot about that...

Thanks for the correction bbuild.

I don't think it would have helped him much anyway... most would say his only chance is a submission (barring some freak occurence), and I can't imagine that Royce has anything up his sleeve (no pun intended) that Hughes doesn't have an answer for.

I think Royce can survive initially while he's fresh and cautious, but as the fight wears on, I'm thinking Hughes by ground and pound stoppage. Probably in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Cheers!

I've never really seen Mat Hughes fight but I think a ground and pound strategy would play right into Royces game. My prediction is Royce will be on his back the whole time going for submissions. If he doesn't get one he will probably lose to a decision.

Royce is a victim of his own success really. MMA is a whole different ballgame now that his techniques have been shared and people train in BJJ AND most importantly they know how to defend against BJJ.

Couple the above with the fact that he will not be able to do the old school UFC moves and I predict MH will ground and pound in the second round.

Also, what is the weight class that they are supposed to be in?

If Royce has to come down in weight while MH does not, it could play a huge role.

If matt hughes fights, I think he will lose, but I see matt backing out, making it a non champ fight or getting sick or something.

I'm pretty sure it's already a non-championship bout.

And I can't see Hughes backing out of this because he's got a chance to stomp a legend and at the same time, make sure he becomes one.

Not sure if it even has a weight class. However, Hughes walks around in 190-200lbs.

Royce runs about 180-185,so i think they will probably meet there, matt wanted to fight tanner for the belt before franklin beat him ,but since he is friends with franklin he wont now.

Damn, 190-200??? That is a huge welterweight.
Indeed. Nothing like the ability to cut weight for a scale.

Directly from his site:
How heavy do you let yourself get in between fights before you start to cut down to 170lbs?
Today is April 24th and I'm 192 pounds, on May 27th I've got to be 175. A week away from the fight I like to be no more than 10 pounds over. I just lose water weight in the last week. -Matt

I think Royce will be at a huge disadvantage without his Gi Every fight I have ever seen him in he heavily relied on it. As good as he is though I am sure he has adapted, but I guess we will have to wait and see if it is enough.

I'm not so excited about this now, I just found out for sure it's a non title fight, oh well that takes some of the zest out of it, what does matt have to lose.

That was probably Saku/Royce that you saw. Royce actually pretty much dominated Yoshida(a 220 pound judo gold medalist!). With that said Royce has a decent chance.

Wow, you think Matt Hughes is gonna back out. What's the logic behind that?

They're fighting at 170/welterweight. They're about the same walk-around weight. It's UFC, weight classes are a must.

Yes but they do not have to make weight and can still fight. Remember Hughes vs Riggs. Riggs did not make weight and still faught.

Yeah, you're right, I wonder what the limit is. Could you be 15 pounds heavier if your opponent agrees to it? I wonder if it will just be at 185, that would make sense.

Maybe Royce has decent standup? It would'nt be the first time that someone with supposed poor standup was suprisingly effective.

Gracie will not stand. He will go for take down after take down.

But there is no way in hell Gracie will succeed with the take down unless Hughes wants to go down,Gracies takedowns are less than desirable.
