This is not always possible, I always superset tricep pull downs and bicep hammer curls or alternate curls...

This was actually one of the applications I was thinking of when I said that. Unless you think you need a bench to do hammer curls, this is a prime example of only using up one machine or bench.
 
at the gym I go to now, the owners have put special straps in a squat/power rack so that people can do hanging leg raises. This means that if some old bloated white woman is blasting her abs (and needs to do 384 sets of course) the total number of power racks has been reduced by 50%.

This really bothers me.
