Gut bacteria = dictates if you're fat or thin

So I was watching ' the truth about... Obesity' on BBC and they found an interesting concept.

yes, dna plays a role, yes surgery can cut appetite, time of eating also back on the limelight, but one that got me was the identical twins - one is fat one is skinny. The difference being the bacteria in their gut.

This was a 5000 couple study, each time the thinnest had the most diverse bacteria (diet being high fibre ,different types) the other was fat with low fibre diet.

They didn't really elaborate on this ie. how strongly different the diets were or exampes of meal and Im wondering if supplentation can help, and what these microbes actually are so they can be targeted. Maybe someone on here is a gut bacteria specialist?

My wife preaches the importance of a quality probiotic for gut health. The one she takes is great, but it says to take at night before bed.. I either forget, or have a drink and don't want to mix the two..

Ok so further digging, the top dog for visceral fat drop by 8.5% is Lactobacillus gasseri

others that prevent storage of fat and processing of proteins are:
Lactobacillus rhamnosus
Lactobacillus amylovorus
or Lactobacillus fermentum
Lactobacillus paracasei

AVOID: Lactobacillus acidophilus as it caused weight GAIN of 1.5kg

Ive found swanson do Lactobacillus gasseri on its own, HealthAid do one for womens parts that cover all these bases (so ignore the label) and Quest do one that drops a bomb on all of those requirements above (10 billion each)

Im sat here with a bloated belly so ive got it on sameday Prime delivery!

I'm skinny and have a low fibre diet
Think how much fibre would help you along further and reduce stress on your GI? Smartypants.

Do you have a low sugar diet?
Because if so, that could be helpful as higher sugars promote your gut bacteria to feed on the stomach lining... and you're training it to help you get fat.

As we age this gets worse so being young helps as we have an abundance of good bacteria.
Artificial sweeteners also aid in fat gain but in a different way.
Eating fermented foods helps.

Young whipper snappers...

Honestly, I'm fairly lean and always have been.
My diet use to be horrid, high sugar and fat and no fibre.

I'm better now days and well into my 30s. I have gut issues, I have the last few years even tho its ok atm.

I agree. I have fought obesity since being a kid and was upto 400lbs at age 26. I am now 50 at 240 (20% bodyfat). Probiotic's have changed my life. Since about 2 months after implementing them, I no longer have to starve myself to stay or get lean. I can eat like you guys 3k calories a day or more and stay lean and have energy to lift and do life. They made me really sick (candida die off) for the first month, but I persevered.

what type? brand?
I am using Metagenics utra flora synergy (pre-biotic plus pro-biotic). From my research, I believe this is the best probiotic you can buy, but it is a bit expensive. I am a bit of a special case with stomach issues. However, I would highly recommend Evomuse Gut Health. Its got lots of great reviews from folks on AM that I respect. Its been a hit since it came out. Whatever the case, I believe everyone should be using a probiotic.

I have heard about the gut bacteria correlation with leanness, but never researched it. One thing i remember though is hearing about Lactobacillus Gasseri and Bifidobacterium Breve i think. About promoting weight and subqutaneus fat loss in humans and maybe providing a metabolism boost? Not sure, it's been a while.
Anyway, does anyone recommend this along with balanced diet and excersise? Like, would it help in cutting?

L-Glutamine is one of the best supplements for gut health. I remember using a scoop in every single large bottle of water I drank once, did this for a month when I had a cold I couldn't shake, was trying to boost my immune system. I lost so much weight that month and was only training 3x a week. I feel like the improved gut health from the high l-glutamine usage really played a part.

I'm looking to these as a good example:
Thorne Research - FloraMend Prime Probiotic - Shelf Stable and Stomach Acid-Resistant Probiotic Blend, and another
Advanced Orthomolecular Research AOR, Advanced Series, Probiotic-3

If one is looking to use this for weight control / loss, my readings have lead me to avoid these:
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus – in both humans and animals
  • Lactobacillus fermentum*– in animals
  • Lactobacillus ingluviei – in animals
  • Lactobacillus reuteri – in humans, although it helps with some obesity-related symptoms [R]

The link from your gut to your brain is significant. The state of your gut microbiome (also known as your second brain) can determine what genes are/arne't expressed - epigenetics. This means body composition, mental state, cancer risks, sleep, etc are all affected by your gut microbiome.

The second brain contains some 100 million neurons, more than in either the spinal cord or the peripheral nervous system, Gershon says. This multitude of neurons in the enteric nervous system enables us to "feel" the inner world of our gut and its contents.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick has a recent interview with Joe Rogan, where she discusses this in more detail. Great watch.

lets not doscount genetics here. it does play a role however i presume you dont have a fat twin?

This study was for all builds of identical twins, the fattest had the least diverse bacteria in the gut, the skinny always had high diversity.

Two points - probiotic can put them there, and fibre which is the food for the bacteria (useless to us from a calorie point of view)

Probiotics is the next money maker out there for companies/marketing. Add this to the recent hype train called Test Boosters, Apple Cider Vinegar, Himaylan Sea Salt, etc. (cough S A R M). Somewhere on that list is pre workouts as well ;-).

Eat a granny apple a day (highest raw form of polyphenols), do daily exercise and eat healthy (more vegies/fruits) and you don't need to worry about spending $$ on products. Nowadays the western diet has become so much processed, no wonder things like gut bacteria, etc become a hot topic and people will jump at any available "magic" product since money is not an issue for most. Not saying the gut bacteria doesnt play a role but it's a topic now simply cos of how deteriorating the western diet is becoming.

If I had market shares in either of the things I said above, I'd be a rich b#$%h by now..lol!

There is a very high correlation between gut microbiota and weight. However, the gut microbiota is highly influenced by diet.

Also want to add the the gut microbiota may not cause the weightloss by itself. Bacteria in the gut causes changes in the brain by communication through the vegal nerve. This pathway works both ways as well. High stress or saddness, etc literally changes the bacteria in the gut. Also the microbiota can turn on or off genetic switches. All of this can lead to a worse or better body. It does seem to be passive changes and not direct changes, that which a bacterium causes a change.

Just to add here, I wouldn't just supplement with digestive enzymes and/or probiotics for weight loss goals. Seeing as how we all train for some reason, the become stronger, improve body comp, or whatever our goals are, that is enough reason to use these types of supplements. Think of it this way, we want to fully digest and utilize the food we put in our bodies to help us grow and to help us perform in the gym. Additionally, if we are bulking, we are taking in a lot of calories at times and this can take a toll on our GI system.

I have used Gut Health daily for several years now, I also introduced a digestive enzyme with each meal because my calories are pretty high. I do not feel bloated and I feel better overall. With Gut Health specifically, I have not caught a cold for a few years, except for this past February when I got Influenza B. I attribute that to Gut Health because I work with kids and my immune system is weakened due to medication I take.

Using these supplements may help with weight loss, but I think we should look at them for the overall health benefits they can provide.

What are people's thoughts on kombucha here?
Yep that was on another ' The truth about.." and they tested probios, fibre, and komucha and the latter was (to what degree is uncertain) better than the other two solo.

However, for eas Ive started mixing soluble fibre into my morning coffee (10g) and take a mixed probio. Im still settling on which probio but i am finding im sleeping better which is a strong sign and i get wind a lot but nice solid farts with no smell (its just co2)..... (sorry)

Fermented good are another great way to attack all strains (or help them!)

kefir for example, a fermented milk drink got op marks for gut bacteria diverstiy.

Having 'fibre ' on the brain all the time like protein really makes a difference, its a long term slog

Im losing weight already with no changes, in fact i binged on booze the last week so im normally a bloaty ball by now.. instead im flatter stomach than normal and trousers are getting baggy.

My guts been sh*t for years i imagine. Lots of alcohol abuse.

for example
Morning, 1.5 teaspoons in my coffee of Inulin.
Breakfast its a fibre cereal, hits another 9g of fibre
Bannana in the day
Probiotic before bed (full spectrum)
Kefir (unsure how much to have but its only fresh for 12 hours so i drink a small tub every few days

You know when youve overdone it because... well. .you'll know! :D

Expect lots of wind, but not horrible bad wind, more CO2

Nice man, yeah it has a quite special taste. I usually have it with oats/musli or my favourite is to fill a bowl with pineapple and kiwi then pour kefir over it and cinnamon on top. Nutrients galore.

Also check the label on your Kefir. Here in Sweden all milk products are pasteurized so they add inn the probiotics afterwards, and usually only one strain. Thats why i started making my own.

I have been a regular user of GutHealth for years. Can’t say that I noticed any weight loss advantages, but I did seem to get sick less often. My mind got swayed a bit though after reading this fairly recent AM article and I have not been so concerned about replenishing my supply.

DO YOU NEED TO TAKE PROBIOTICS?*(SCIENCE SAYS IT MIGHT BE A WASTE) - AnabolicMinds.com

I tend to find myself questioning if the microbes in any of these pills are actually alive...in many brands.

On the other hand, I find it interesting that Lactobacillus Reuteri and Lactobacillus Rhamnosus are 2 strains that are supposed to be beneficial for supporting test levels.

I am not really for or against probiotics at this point. The article above just kind of busted my bubble and made me second guess it all..
