Not good. I've certainly heard about spyware but I wasn't aware of all that nonsense in having Google installed on the browser.

After reading this, I uninstalled Google and went to Invalid Link Removed and purchased this anti-spyware product. For $27, it's worth it to me to not have to worry about any possible snooping or evesdropping with the supplements I buy through the Internet.

Ad-Aware is a good product, but in my experience SpyBot Search and Destroy is better. It not only finds spyware and Adware that Ad-Aware doesn't it also gives you a detailed description of what everything is. It is also free. Since you bought Ad-Aware already you may as well keep using it, but it wouldn't hurt to use both. Invalid Link Removed

For future reference guys I have yet to see an internet toolbar of any kind not contain spyware.
 
I've never used the google toolbar, but just put your screen name in google and see what comes up. If an employer ever found out my screen name he would think I dealt and used steroids just by the threads that come up. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but most employers don't see it that way.
 
This is a new technological wrinkle to an existing situation. Many years ago, my father said, "don't write down what you don't want other people to read." The same is true times 1000 on the web. Unlike a sheet of paper, anyone in the world with Internet access also has access to that document. Similarly, where you go in the real world can be seen, and so can where you go in the cyber space. Technology is not camouflage, it is a magnifying glass.
 
ok maybe one of you guys can help me with this Google problem then. As of last week, I can no longer change my homepage from anything but the Google homepage. I've downloaded NoAdware but can't seem to get rid of whatever the hell is causing the problem.

PC1, how did you uninstall Google???

The Google toolbar shows up on the registered program list in the control panel. So go into your control panel, add/remove programs, and remove it there.

To change your homepage, if you're using MS Internet Explorer, choose Tools and then Internet Options from the upper menu. You can change your homepage there in the General tab.

I'm not the most knowledgeable bro on this subject, but you might also want to clear your internet history, files and delete cookies. I would then go in and delete all your temp files as well.

I also discovered with Spykiller that I had some registry entries that were modified with some of this crap. I had to run regedit [start, run, regedit] and find the entry and delete it manually.

I'm frankly confused about this crap. I downloaded the free spykiller, and bought the Ad-aware. What I DON'T get is even with these installed, if I go surfing for a bit, then run either one of these programs, they're STILL finding more cookies and Bvllshite on my computer?! I realize the free spykiller just finds the stuff and points it out to you, and on the free version, you have to go in and delete it through My Computer, or through Windows Explorer. But I thought Ad-Aware was supposed to block this shite from getting back on in the first place?! Also, I still get pop-ups, although not as many?!

So what do you guys do? Do you have to go looking for these damned files and registry changes EVERY TIME you go web surfing if you want to have a clean machine?

Ad aware doesn't block anything, it just finds it and deletes it for you. Spybot will immunize against certain things(I think its up to 506 now) but there is still many things that they just find and delete for you. I have found since I switched from MS Internet Explorer to Mozilla(now at build 1.6) that most of the problems have gone away. IE just sucks and seems to let everything in.
 
PC1 Adwatch which should be part of your AdAware suite should block new spyware and adware from installing. If your PC was infested with spy and adware then sometimes the only way to get rid of it all is to format and start over. Many of these programs have a # of hidden files that will recreate the original program. Needless to say it becomes a major pain in the ass.

My suggestion is run spybot then have it run automatically after a reboot. Once it says it's clean give it 15 minutes or so and run it again. If it finds spyware that it supposedly already got rid of then you may as well just reformat. Locking down IE's security settings such as some of active X and javascript will help.

Spyblocker is another program that will run in your tray and stop spyware. I haven't used it in a couple of years, but I remember it working well. For whatever reason I don't get any on my home PCs, but it's something I'm constantly fixing at work. You may want to take a mental note of what sites you are visiting and then finding spyware and staying away from those sites.
 
I forgot you bought Ad-aware, which does block. Thanks for catching that NPursuit. I use the free version which doesn't block.
 
HOw in the hell none of you all not mention installing either a hardware firewall or a software firewall. That is what is going to block some of the adwares and softwares. You can always change your IE history settings to automatcially delete cookies and temp files after a certain amount of days. You can also get a more secure IE like firefox or Mozilla and there are some others and all these are free. Plus getting the XP SP2 will definitely increase security but you have to activate the firewall already builtin to the OS.

Well Mozilla and Firefox are the same thing (it's called Mozilla Firefox) but it is definitely a better browser in my opinion. I use it currently and although it does have its security flaws, Microsoft's IE has more severe flaws based on a recent study conducted by Norton.
 
Actually, Mozilla is both the browser and email program in one. FireFox(made by the Mozilla foundation) is just the browser.

Actually Mozilla Thunderbird is the e-mail program ;). And yes I know Firefox is the browser from Mozilla.
