Dave Palumbo came out saying that Gustavo had a stroke. The guy was pushing the androgens hard like most of them in the 90's but he was probably messing with speed and other rec drugs. Not that I have a source just basing that on some of his training videos and my own personal experience with amphetamines.
On a side note didn't he do something controversial that got him banned from the IFBB?
