I agree.. I start training my dogs from the day, i get them..
As for the command thing, i also agree.. IMO i would make the dog go "down" across the room, and "wait" till you put the food down, and give him permission to eat.. The down command, is a pretty dominating, command IMO.
This is probably the best advice, a couple of people have essentially said the same thing. There are a few really good tips, but the main thing is, you 'control' the food, you put it down, you take it away, no matter what its made of.
I had a pretty big rotty that I trained to sit perfectly still even with the dish of food on the floor right in front of him, until I told him, or actually gave him the command to eat, and I could take the food away and he never growled or snapped, he would simply return to the waiting position, and then I would give him back the food and reinforce his behavior with praise. Its best to vary the intervals, and at different feeding times during the day, and remember its not teasing, its conditioning.
This also makes a big difference when for example you might drop something on the floor while preparing a meal, if the dog is conditioned to wait for his food, he will not jump on whatever falls on the ground.
