filters

i bought a box to split with a buddy, they work quite well, 33mm so bigger then the usual 25mm. Just make sure oil is nice and warm when filtering.

I prefer the 0.2um anyhow. Whatman still as plenty of them.

I still can't seem to get the .2um's from my wholesaler, but I have acquired a product I like, the millipore hi-cap 10cm2 syringe filter. I have posted flow times on this product (3-4X faster filtering than the whatman 25mm's) in the whatman filter thread, but only had the nipple output tips to try. These filters build up enough static electricity that it pulls the solution up the filter housing and makes it look like a housing leak. But I have now tried the luer-lock output version, and am happy to say they work wonderfully (unless you are filtering something extremely flammable -- ethanol, etc., and the volatile mix is on the outside filter housing...).

One other disadvantage: plan on a lower pressure application, as these filters are rated for 45PSI. I tested the .45um and .22um, and blew out the .22 by squeezing excessively (thought I'd try to force it, to see if I could pop it -- yes, I could). However, they still filter about 3X faster than the whatmans, and last 2-4X as long.

wondering about this too
I blew 2 of the whatman filters filtering my test so I'm ordering some of the titans soon.

they are the ones with the yellow ring around them and they keep leaking so i would hold off on ordering them.

Im just waiting for them to arrive, ordered both the .2 and the .45 as soon as I get them I'll let you know how they work.

Hey KC how warm do you usually keep your gear when filtering? I've acquired a water bath with clamps so I can keep the bottle in low warm to boiling water, I dont want to make it too hot.

i herd they come in a zip lock bag thats what they call sterile? is that how you recieved yours chemist?

mine have red ring around them.

I usually keep the oil nice and warm, put on burner with boiling water in a sealed glass jar, leave till boils in water for 10 min or so then remove from heat but leave bottle in water to keep hot.

mine have a blue ring around them, no leaks, slow as all heck but that is usual, and yes they did come in a little plastic baggie

one question, is it possible to filter the test out of the oil?
this is the clearest test I have ever made, it was a little cloudy but after filtering it is crystal clear Im using the .2um filters and I keep the oil pretty warm.

If you used enough solvent and the oil was nice and warm, you would filter very little if any out.

ok, from another post on a different board, I found if you put the stuff in the fridge it should solidify so I did that right next to another bottle of oil and ba
the "test" became a mass of goo while the oil and ba mix just got cold
after being at room temp for about 15min it went back to liquid and clear as crystal again
just for the heck of it I refiltered one of my fina bottles and it is really clear now as well
it seems the .2 filters do a pretty good job of filtering they just seem to clog up a lot quicker

I love them so far. My solution went through much easier than a comparable whatman! I just kept the oil hot and it went through fairly nice :)

I've had nothing but problems with them. I just can't seem to get my solution thru the damn filter. I tried warming up the oil and the most i get thru is a drop after applying as much pressure as i can to the syringe. I'll try heating up the oil more (like KC suggested) and see if that works better. I have about 20 of the filters and i'm about ready to throw them out if heating the oil doesn't work. I definitely like Whatmans better.

weird, I'm the opposite  BTW The only way I get anything through easily (whatman or titan) is to get that oil HOT and keep it that way! Anyway, if you're looking to get rid of them I will certainly adopt :D

I plan on filtering a bunch of EQ and deca this weekend. If i still have probs filtering, you can have the rest.
