Eat Junk, Still Make Gains?

lol, I think we all got friends or ppl we see in the gym who just eat big and make crazy LBM gains and keep the BF low.
My old workout buddy would have a post workout meal and 4 scoops of muscle milk after every workout. He would ONLY use Muscle milk and when I asked him what else he is eating he said for breakfast he eats 8-10 eggs, 3 cups rice, then a 4 scoop shake. Also, during the day he will drink 2-4 scoops every 3 hrs. And this was on his non cheat days... His cheat days were KFC. 4 burgers, and 2 chicken breasts. And 2 fries. He managed to bulk from 160-200lbs in about 8 months. gained about 30lbs in lbm. The only supp he took was glutamine, fish oil, and creatine. Placed 3rd in a physique show in Cali where Phil Heath guest posed... Something like 60+ competitors in his division. Some people can eat all the crap they want and get away with it. But still, he was motivated to do it. And he reached his goals.
Moral: He learned what worked for him.
Regardless of health etc, he wants to compete in physique. I am training him now online for another show and he is getting in around 4.5k cals a day, bulk of course. 250g protein is all he needs. Everything else just burns in him. These guys exist, lucky, but they do exist lol. Granted he doesn't "think" of any of the stuff he is eating as junk. It's all just energy to his mind and body it seems.
Damn lol

Hahaha Matt no joke. I was one of those. 9 months went from 145-190 on a super bulk. Was at 8% bf 186lbs after the cut which was 2-3 months. However the bigger you get the harder it is. At least for me. Oh btw. Double baconator is 60/60/40 protein fat and carbs. And chilli is 16/4/0. so macros were a little high on the fat. But then again my body barely processes fat anymore lol... I think it would be great if fast food places would just like cook or else drain the grease off of their burgers. A good burger like that but with a ton of fat cut out. Not a bad piece of food. I think that's how people do it. Enough work to burn the bad. And enough protein in it to give them muscle.

I literally ate a predominately fast food diet for 6+ years, while maintaining a bf of under 12%. While it may not be the most healthy thing to do, I made great gains on a fast food + supplement diet lol. Now that I'm married though I eat way healthier due to my wife :).

I know a guy who eats junk, eating out at mcdonalds, chick Fil a, & so on. Has a good amount of muscle and not a lot of fat.
He says he just tracks his macros and works out hard.

I don't get how that works for him, is it genetics?
Is it really him watching his macros? (it may not be healthy food but it works)

Anyone have any ideas?
everyone knows "that guy" but doesn't mean that you will know him in 10 years...Unhealthy eating may not be "visible" to the naked eye but trust me its not going to last his whole life. just worry about YOU and eat well. Check on your buddy in a decade or so and see if he still feels the same way.

I ate fast food for my past 5 meals. One day last week I ate at DD for Breakfast, BK for lunch, MCD for second lunch, checkers for dinner, and Wendys for a snack . LOL! I eat like this all the time. I eat healthy the weight seems to come off very quickly though. I had a few days where I took in over 15,000 calories. When it gets to that point though I get a little sick.

I seem to get larger. I eat fast food every day. Most of my food is fast food. I'm not talking salad either. Burgers, burgers, chicken and fries, more burgers, pizza, more chicken and fries, soda, coffee, ice cream, add in some bacon strips, burger cheese, and more bacon strips. Just doesn't seem to cause me to gain much fat, though I am putting on some fluff, its mostly due to being inconsistent with my workouts and not alot of fluff when you add in how much muscle I've put on- which I'm pretty sure would've been there even if I ate clean. I'm at about 15%bf right now. Last year I was at 182 10% bf. Thats not really that bad with how much crap I eat. If I were to do HIT I'm pretty sure eating junk food wouldn't affect me at all. Fast food is my Diet, I know its not healthy, but I also don't think its as bad as alot of people make it out to be. I do think all of the sugar I take in is bad though.

This should have its own thread. Im sure anyone who watches the show has to wonder how the hell do they look like that with their lifestyle ?!?! I'm not overweight by any means but if I just as much look at a bag of chips it just adds to the battle of the belly buldge !! I hate it!

everyone knows "a guy" who has an insane metab. or just is genetically blessed to be able to basically "cheat" his way to the top. Just understand it's all relevant. Do you want to have a heart attack at 35? Have diabetes at 40? Heart surgery at 50? His body may appear "fit" but trust me you open him up and his blood work won't match his looks. Do it the right way if you want to be around for your kids to see you working out. It's about health not about "looks"

I hate to admit this, but this is me, I have always had a crazy metabolism, could eat as much of anything I want, and still be ripped. Everyone hates me for it, but truth is, its a curse, in its own way, because It makes me believe I don't need cardio (Obviously everyone does) I only recently started really focusing on eating right, because I want to see how far I can get doing EVERYTHING right, and not just lifting right.

The concept you guys are talking about really isn't unheard of or bizarre...the idea of "if it fits your macros" is popular on a lot of nutrition forums. In the long-term I think it tends to be a bit of a crutch because the **** in most processed foods/fast foods (**** that doesn't even have caloric impact, mind you) honestly cannot be good for you (McDonalds just released that announcement that "pink slime" is officially no longer in their products).

When I'm cutting, I keep my diet very "clean" in the sense that all of my food sources are meticulously documented, weighed, and usually prepared by me, because I want to be in control of every calorie that goes into my body.

Buuutttt whenever I'm bulking, I definitely follow the "if it fits your macros" type of diet. I haven't eaten fast food in probably 5 years, everything I eat is bought from a grocery store, but not everything is considered "great" for you. For instance, when I'm bulking my main focus is on large amounts of carbohydrates because I usually gain best off of those. What are my favorite sources? Kids breakfast cereal (Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Reese's Puffs are favorites) and low-fat ice cream (Edy's Slow-Churned Variety...mouthgasm) :D

Tell me about it... I was like 240lbs at 6'2'' when I was 14-15, NOT of muscle either. Till this day that haunts me as anything out of the norm puts extra weight on me.

I eat around 3600 calories when BULKING, and I'm 225.

Anytime I have vacations, say, for a week or two, and I go out of my eating habits by eating out - even when I try to eat "healthy" - at the end of two weeks I more often than not put on about 4 - 8lbs.

SUCKS. Big time. The only "upside" is that bulks are a cake. I grow like crazy and pack on muscle at an insane rate. Problem with that is, I also often pack a whole, whole lot more of fat than I would like.

But hey, that's life, everyone has to fight their personal battle! ;)

The "BB'ng" mentality leads people to think that you cannot make quality gains in strength or mass without adhering to a certain group of foods PLers will tell you the exact opposite and that you need to throw in a high amount of non-clean foods to makes those gains. In the end, performance nutrition depends on the goal of the athlete and whether or not health is the number one priority.
unfortunately most "bb'ng" mentalities are based on current myths and hand me down thought processes.....although i do eat salmon, tilapia, chicken, lean beef, wheat and grain products, fruits and veggies, i do eat lean pockets, chik fil a, ice cream, tons of starchy carbs, cereal by the box full, cheap frozen pizza's, etc...i seem to maintain body fat by monitoring calories, intense training, and little things like 10-15 min warm up cardio...now when i diet down i will be more "health" cautious

I'm in the same boat as you. Though, if you're anything like me, the flip side of it is that you pack on muscle fairly easily. It's a pain in the ass for me to drop fat, but I don't really lose a lot of muscle or strength in the process.

I feel your pain!! I was a SKINNY kid, but around late elementary/early middle school I got FAT, around 210 at about 5'8? .. It still haunts me, I gain muscle pretty easily, so I wonder what I would've been like without these extra fat cells... if I could gain muscle this easy without having to diet so much I could be really ****ing big.... I've thought about getting some lipo done to permanently remove some of these fat cells, but I don't know if I will or not... sure would be good to bulk longer and cut less...

Same boat; I'm pure endomorph that way.

I can add strength in caloric deficit, which is good because if I wander into caloric surplus...BOOM. I have to keep a serious handle on my carb macro count; I rarely go over 125g on a non-refeed training day, and for me they have to be clean carb sources.
