Do Close Calls Grow Bodybuilding?

This is actually a very interesting question that I have had posed to me over the years in the sport of bodybuilding by competitors and enthusiasts alike. It is the idea that razor thin wins and losses create tremendous discussion on message boards, social media platforms, and even at gyms and contests. It is a novel concept because of the fact that we are dealing with a very subjective sport unlike objective sports like basketball or football or baseball. In bodybuilding there are no goals or baskets to be made. In this sport it's about subjective criteria determined by a panel of judges. It is not the same panel of judges and they are not looking at the same physiques. Things like symmetry and balance are judged on a number of different physiques. Some are mass monsters others are streamlined aesthetic freaks others are hybrids. It really it runs the gamut.
The argument being made here is that competitions that go down to the wire and require multiple comparisons are the ones that create the interest that will grow the sport. And I suspect that that is true to a certain extent. I think anytime you have competitiveness that is going to generate buzz. When fans are stumped and can't make up their mind and judges are in the same boat you have the makings of a truly nail-biting situation. This is why I think fans get turned off when you have multi-year champions at the Olympia or the Arnold. And that is why I think people got a little bit bored with Ronnie, Phil, and even Jay to a certain extent even though his reign was interrupted one year. Anytime fans pretty much expect who is going to win and who is going to place second and who is going to place third, then going to the show is not really a top priority. And sometimes even watching the show on pay-per-view or worse yet - on a free webcast - has lost value its well. Therefore I 100% agree that close calls increase interest in bodybuilding but we can't stop there. https://www.ironmaglabs.com/2024/do-close-calls-grow-bodybuilding/

We can't deny that there are politics in bodybuilding where the powers-that-be seem to decide the fate of the contestants which often leaves fans fuming and despondent.

I think fans who have bought tickets to see a show like Mr. Olympia should be allowed to vote for their favorites and then the judges take their scores and audience scores, average it and whoever comes out on top is the winner.

Bodybuilding is a mens bueaty pageant and bueaty or perfection means different things to different people. On the day of a contest your judged based off personal opinions of the judges that day. So theres a lot of room for politics to take over on top of someone's opinions.

Close calls either make you try harder or call it quits. After enough close calls kai called it quits

No offense to you but that is a terrible fucking idea. Based on comments sections fanboys don't have a fucking clue what they are actually looking at and some guy who spent 200 bucks and is sitting 3000ft away from the stage should ABSOLUTELY not have ANY SAY in who wins. Watch Tyler Manion explain postshow why they judged the way they did, the days of Weider and dbag Wayne calling shows from the hip for business purposes are over. The judging has NEVER been better than it is now and has NEVER been more transparent.

99% Fans have zero clue. That's why they give the people's choice or people's champ at some shows. So the fans can have a say. Iys usually the 3rd or 4th place guy getting people's champ. Also idk if some of you have ever been to a show. I stumbled across one in florida before and I was down there around olympia time a few years back. Seeing these guys in person is very different then on a tv or phone screen. I walked by a guy that was probably 5'2 235 ripped and I looked like a tennis player standing next to him. But if you put him in a wide up you probably wouldn't make the top 10, what regulr ppl think is contest ready is like 8-10%. We the people/average fan, we dont got a clue lol

Just a suggestion. It can be an unofficial vote or perhaps an extra award for fan-favorite bodybuilders.

They do that at some shows. Rolley Winkler use to get those and before Hadi won the O he was the ppl champ twice I believe. I think the big problem with fans voting is many ppl see the build up and all the gnarly gym photos under perfect lighting and angles and there minds get made up before the show.

Remember the 10 million ppl saying 50yr old levrone was gonna win the O he put up a few pics that looked amazing. Then he stepped on stage and he probably wouldn't have made top 10 in the amature Olympia. Ppl get so wrapped up in there emotions that they cant judge anything fairly

I get what you are saying. And of course, certain muscle magazines/media/publications exclusively feature one or two bodybuilders and that turns away the public's attention from other equally amazing bodybuilders who don't get the same features/promotion opportunities.
