DHEA - WEIGHT GAIN?

I started taking 50mg DHEA daily to raise my very low E2 a little over two mos. back. Previously I had been on 25mg EOD and had no noticeable issues. My last DHEA-S level was 200 (Nov. 2013).

I changed little else in my diet, calories, or workout programs. Two mos. later, I notice having gained at least 10lbs. I do notice my arm strength has increased, so I suspect I added some mass, but I definitely did NOT lose bodyfat and instead gained, despite the claims that it leans you out.

Anyone else have this happen on DHEA? Maybe for me this is an excessive dose.

I don't know that I have read any evidence, other than anecedotal, that suggest higher DHEA-S levels will make you leaner. If the research is out there I would really like to read it.

It is possible that the DHEA is riasing your estrogen levels and that is the reason for some fat gain. However I would not suspect 50mg/day to have a significant of an impact on e2 either.

I have not noticed it and I take DHEA. It is very hormonal and could have a play in what you are seeing, and I will also say that you may want to lower that dose. I was closer to the bottom of the range and 25mg brings me to the top. I am actually going to lower this to 10-15mg because I come from the mind set of taking the least amount of something to get the results.

Your estrogen receptors may have been down regulated for a long time so one may be super sensitive to normal levels. If there is good estrogen metabolism then this should work it self over time. It is suggested to my clients when supplementing DHEA to take it out of the capsule and put it in a spoonful of olive oil. Dhea is a fat soluable nutrient. By making this recommendation alot of people DHEA will shoot up when tested by their doctor 3-4 weeks down the road. It is suggested to try to get a trough of around 250-300 to allow a little more for the spike. Many times I will suggest people to use transdermal where you can monitor the levels for $22 from a genova 24 hour test just specifying DHEA only. Many times with women I will suggest to their doctors when they are supplementing TD to have this test ran to measure testosterone and dhea levels for $45. Its the cheapest way I have found to help quantify if the recommendations are working. If they have insurance they I will suggest the 24 hours complete urine hormone profile from Genova which can be covered through many insurance plans for $139.
