Texans LB Cushing suspended four games for violating substance policy
NFL.com Wire Reports
Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing has received a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, NFL Network's Steve Wyche confirms through a league source.
Cushing will miss regular-season games against the Indianapolis Colts (home), the Washington Redskins (road), Dallas Cowboys (home) and Oakland Raiders (road). He should be eligible to return for an Oct. 10 home game against the New York Giants.
Cushing, the 15th overall pick by the Texans in the 2009 draft, was named The Associated Press 2009 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year after posting 134 tackles, four sacks, four interceptions and two forced fumbles while helping the Texans to a 9-7 record and their first winning season in franchise history.
Cushing was a runaway winner in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league. Cushing received 39 votes, easily beating Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd, who had six, and becoming the second Texans linebacker in four seasons to win the award. DeMeco Ryans took it in 2006.
Cushing was the seventh consecutive linebacker and the ninth in the last 10 years to be voted the top defensive rookie. The previous winner was New England's Jerod Mayo.
