Crashed my motorcycle on friday.....

My hand may be broken, so Ill keep this short.

I bought an 05 SV650S about 3 weeks ago, my last bike was a ninja 250 about 2 years ago, I have about 700 miles on the SV and had about 7-900 on the 250.

I was up riding some good roads at about 5:30 before the sun went down, while the road is good for riding turn wise, many of the turns a dirty with gravel of dirt, so I was takin it easy. I came up on a left turn that headed downhill and was going about 40-50, saw some dirt on the road, was leaned over for the turn, thought the dirt was too much so I stood my bike up and tried to stop hard....didnt stop before I hit the shoulder and my front tire sank in the mud. Bike went down at about 25-40 and I followed. My rightside was in the dirt and my left side was on pavement. Lookin at the corner after the crash I was pissed, it just looked dirty(it was stained with dirt I guess), I made a bad choice trying to brake, I should have kept leaning, but nothing I can do about it now, I am definently going to ride again, but my confidence is lower.

Damage to my bike from what I have looked at is to the left side of the bike mainly. The shifter is a little bent, and the fairing is broken to hell, the lights work though, the radiator seems to have shifted a little also, but the bike starts and runs, although the throttle cable seems to be stuck a little open, because unless I close the throttle hard, it idles at about 3000rpm (I have to press the throttle away from me) I was able to pull my bike into my garage and it went into gear.

I was wearing the MotoGP Compression leathers, Teknic Vilolator Pro Gloves (03 model) Alpinestars GPX boots, A KBC Helmet and a Dainese BAP Back protector.

The leathers held up well, no tears, they are just dirty, my left knee is swolen to hell, I think the bike fell on it I cant tell, there is dirt all over the right side, which would have been my skin with dirt in it, good times. It hurts to walk and my knee is kinda black but its not so bad, haha.

The gloves did thier job also, my left hand took the main impact, and my thumb area is pretty swollen, the palm of the glove is a bit abraded but I am fine, no road rash at all.

The boots worked as well, lucky I was wearing them, the top of my left boot above my big toe is worn down through the leather, but didnt wear through the toe box. My feet are fine.

Helmet didnt contact, although the visor is scratched.

Back protector didnt hit either I dont think, my back is dirty, but my back doesnt hurt at all, haha maybe its because my BAP did its job.

I am going to go to the doctor tomorrow and I will post pics of my bike and my gear, along with some good pics of my knee. My knee injury makes me want to develop side impact protection for knees.

I have insurance but I dont know if I wanna claim and raise my rates, after all I have only been covered for 20 days, what do you guys think, my deductable is 300 dollars. What do you guys think? I cant afford to fix it out of pocket at the moment, though I dont know how much it will be right now.

shitty week for me.... my truck (2000 nissan frontier) was stolen, and crashed into a tree last sunday, I only have liability insurance on my truck so thats gonna be great and now I crash my bike. I am grateful to be alive and walk away from this though. may have no money, but I got my family.

Merry Christmas!!!

Haha so much for keepin it short! Ride safe everyone, and wear your gear!

Sorry to hear about your accident... But :clap2: for wearing full gear and for being so positive about things! I am sure things will work out for you.

holy **** dude.

imagine if you didnt have boots on and had tennis shoes on. you would have no toes.
posts like these are the main reasons i keep ALL my gear on no matter how long/how far i go.

+1 on full gear, good call. I have an 01 sv650s, i live about half an hour from Deals Gap (the dragon) in tennessee, I got the sv last summer and have put 11.5k miles on it up there and on surrounding roads. good thing is you have a sharp learning curve doing that, bad thing is your gonna wreck your stuff also. i've put my down 3 times, 2 off-the-road lowsides and one highside. you are right about ins. rates going up on you if you claim it. Maybe consider what you want out of the bike - planning on selling it? Crash costs will be considerable. you will never be able to keep up with I-4's on it, but who cares, its a damn good bike that can keep you happy for years if reliability and all around mix of riding is your thing. Personally, I'd get on ebay, buy a dual headlight setup & a veypor speedo, and go "streetfighter" with the thing - ditch the fairings. I kept my fairings after all 3 wrecks, had it repainted after the 3rd, the cost of keeping those up is just too high when you know the chances of putting that thing down again is likely. also, get some frame sliders from motosliders if you dont have them already, they are the longest sliders you can get for the sv's. will save you a lot on future tipovers and spills.

i'm glad you're ok-

speaking of sv's- i had an 03 sv650s, copper color. i loved that bike. i had two wrecks while i had it. my first one was me being a squid- i was poppin' wheelies and i came down wrong and bam- bike came out from under me and i rolled. i was wearing shorts and a tshirt and some shox. yah- i was dumb. broke my clavical in 14 places, left wrist in 2, had to have tar picked out of my road rash on my knees and elbows.. it sucked. i was on pain-killers, all strapped up and couldn't move without help for about a month or so. taking a poo was really a pain in the arse.

anyhow, second wreck i low slid on the interstate, and was wearing full gear this time. bike bit it pretty good. ended up fixing it up some and trading it in for my now 05 600RR. i retook the MSF course, scored a perfect on the riding and a 96 on the written and then took the advanced course afterwards scoring very similar results.

if you're ever up towards deal's gap or want to ride the skyway- give me a holler! i'm a much safer rider now. i don't like the feel of pavement and don't want to feel it again..

glad to hear you made it out fairly well.

wierd had the same bike, i have the 04 yellow model. i put it down twice both for locking up the front brakes (wont happen again). both times were low side at about 30 MPH but i was wearing full gear both times. although the gloves i had the second time were half cloth half leather, almost lost my pinky finger. other then the small road rash and a dislocated and broken shoulder blade i was fine :D haha

ive had to take of my front fairing before, it takes some time and another person to fix it. the price on the front fairing though is expensive and you should look at it and add up what youre going to fix and what youre not going to fix.

ive bent the shifter back into place and also my wheel stand. both of my mirrors are scratched which im sure yours are too but they still work and i haven't replaced them. ive replaced the turning signal lights a few times, they cost about 30 bucks each.

figure out the cost, maintenance, and time you would need to put into it then decide on if you want to claim it or not. being 21 and only having it for 20 days might bring that price up a lot. plus i was told by insurance that my sv650s will be put into the same category as super sport bikes like CBRs and my cost is going to skyrocket. fuckers.

Im heading to the doctor tomorow, Ill keep you guys updated, it seems like the bike will need a new upper fairing, a new shifter, new clutch handle, new bar end and possible some work on the radiator (it came off the left mount) and throttle cable. Not to bad for 40mph! The lights still work thankfully

Should be about 500 dollars or so if I buy **** on ebay (I will be using a mechanic probably also)

Ill post pics after I clean up my bike tomorrow.

Thanks for the kind words

If you need a good place for parts, try oneidasuzuki.com.. i think that's the place. they have probably by far some of the best deals on factory parts. i used them when i laid down my sv.

bosco, get on Invalid Link Removed and check us out if you like, we do huge group rides usually twice a year, I believe there were right under 80 of us at the last ride. lots of cool folks on there that are local riders and whatnot. I am also stuffperson on there.
If you ever see an all black faired 1st gen sv around knox with an iridium windscreen its me.

If you have snapped as many brake pedals and shifters as i have, as long as the main lever is still there, drill a hole and put a 3 dollar clevis pin from the hardware store in there, good for another shot, saves about 65 bucks.

To original poster: Good luck with the hand

My hand may be broken, so Ill keep this short.

:toofunny: :toofunny: Just couldn't stop typing once you started eh?

I'm glad that you're OK. I can only imagine how pissed you were after checking out the road.

i broke BOTH hands in a crash last summer. sigh... imagine BOTH hands in casts... not cool... hard to do some basic stuff.

anyway, glad you're ok and you were wearing FULL GEAR. i love these yahoos that ride in a t-shirt. Just imagine if you had on a t-shirt, sun glasses, and sandals. all i have to say is if you ride like this you're a MORON. even if you know the road and it's a mile ride, you know never know the conditions are what COULD be there.

let that finger heal up (3-4 weeks) unless it's broke farther down... then it could take a little longer and it'll be a bit until you get full movement and ligaments loosen up.

get back on that bike and remember you only live once so you have to do whatever makes you happy.

I just got back from the doc, my hand is broken in two places, one in my thumb and at the end of my thumb near my wrist. They put it in a cast and are putting pins in it next week. The doctor said with the level of brusing on my knee it looks pretty bad so he ordered an MRI which I have next week. I started working on the bike tonight, it looks like my leg saved my cases and frame, hahaha guess there had to be a trade off. Ill put up some pics of everything soon.

Yeah, damn hands always break no matter what in crashes. They're so fragile you'd never know it.

I bet you didn't even think your hand was broken. After mine, I picked my bike up with TWO BROKEN HANDS and was devastated that my baby (Gixxer) was hurt. Didn't care about me... LOL

Best of luck with the recovery and glad to hear you're ok!

Sorry to hear bout your crash man. but glad you are alright. I laid down my R1 this summer right before 1100 miles same situation, it was early in the season here in NY and i wanted to right hand hit some gravel at about 55mph in some S-turns. cost me $5600 in repairs my insurance didnt go up though if you have State farm email me and i will fill you in on their policy and if you dont i only paid 44bucks a month for full coverage and im only 21 so you might wanna check them out great rates for bikes. jump over on the R1 forum and put up a post a lot of those guys have a ton of bikes and its a great site to get used parts from. good luck man.... oh and if you havent been to the gap you gotta go :study:
