Countdown to 1st Competition - Advice?

HA HA HA we got us a real competitior! PS I like that last shot with the sunglasses! You are looking good, and those two guys advice are great, as Ripped has helped me for my first comp. Do not worry about weight, at all as the Key to winning is CONDITIONING!!! my good associate form my gym won the NPC Midwestern Continentials as a MIDDLEWEIGHT! there were some Beastly Heavys and Superheavy that was in great shape, but let me tell you my guy was the biggest and most SHREDDED middleweight and competitor in the SHOW. Keep your head in the game, and when it seems like storms are coming your way KNOW YOU ARE DOING WELL, and that you have to press on! KEEP it up, and do the damn thing big guy!!!

Thanks, guys - I appreciate the encouragement. BF% about 9 with 19 days to go. Will probably make 7%, not sure about lower - but it's academic at this point - it will be what it will be....and in the final analysis it depends on who shows up that day. I know one guy my age - 5'8" 184# who has outstanding proportions. If he's tight enough, he'll be hard to beat ;)

I love it when people put me in that light :D

Hey Joey, my 2-bit advice is to have as much fun with this as possible. Every competitor around you is gonna be "life or deathing" it, subsisting in a haze of stress. You're progressing continually, and hot damn you'll have some great photos when all is said & done. Maybe even a trophy - who knows, the judges are usually from Planet Politics.

Main point, you're doing great, stay in the minority & have fun with the contest. Looking forward to our next meeting.

Alan as a Grand Master? Fat Loss Update.

I'm sure you'd be dangerous in competion, Alan. Fortunately they don't mix the pups with the old dogs - so unless you're really 20 years older than your profile says I don't have to worry about you nipping at my heels.

Update: Fat loss stalled a bit, and I've upped cardio to handle it along with a slight carb reduction. The fat loss has resumed. Will it be enough and will it be in time? We'll find out in 12 days.

Having done 2 shows in the last 5 weeks, one at 7% and one at 6.65%, you will look great - and have a tight 6pack - that advice about having fun is so true - I almost won the masters 40+ and overall masters - based on the prejudging, then some politics entered into it and I came in 3rd. So things happen - but I looked my best and my family and friends thought I did great - so in the end it is all about having some fun. You will do great

Heres what 7% looks like - I still had 13mm of water & fat on my lower back - it is comming off now, but slowly.

Thank you !! I just got the score sheets - I was ranked 1,2,2,2,4, and into a 3 way tie when you drop the high and low scores. Since the other guys each got two 1s and two 3s, I took home the 3rd place - so you never know how it will go - but its a lot more fun than sitting in the audiance!! By the way, try not to pig out too much after the show - I am up to 8.8% bf in just one week, and now have to dive deep with no cheating to get to 5% in 7weeks, hang in there and consider using talipa fish for your protein source - it will shread you! 7 oz per meal with 3-4 oz of sweet potato, and veggies. Good luck

30 Hours to Go!

Well, guys, it's almost that time. Once again, I appreciate all the advice & encouragement.

Weight hit 179.8 this morning - far lower than I had hoped, but it is definitely tight. I'm still dropping subcutaneous water (and consuming water constantly) and might go to 178 or so before throwing on a judicious amount of carbs Saturday morning to re-inflate the muscle.

My posing routine is about as ready as it's going to be (exerpt from "Driving" by HipSon) and I'm carrying several pair of posers so I can make last minute color decisions based upon my look after the last coat of Jan Tana on Saturday AM.

If my brain is functioning on Sunday, I'll post results and some preliminary pics. But one way or the other, it's been a fascinating ride.

Thanks again!

You'll be great - you have the right attitude - your have done all the hard work - not it is time to relax and enjoy the show

Hey man good luck, I am glad everyone was able to help you out. You have kept a possitive attitude and will do great

Joey,

Can't wait for the pics! I can't believe you're lighter than me right now, hah. Right now I'm up at the wee hours taking care of my 4 wk old.

Get some shots of you eating the post-contest meal if you can.

I know that you'll do great.

Contest Results

Well, guys - not quite lean enough to bring home the gold. Pulled a respectable 4th place behind my training partner (3rd), a ripped Britt, and a guy who has been winnning Grand Masters all over So Cal (7 contests this year).

Feeling good - I know what I need to do to get it better next time.

Contest pics will be up as soon as I get them from the event photographer.

Thanks again for all your support & encouragement.

Congrats on having the nerve & tenacity to push through the prep 1st & foremost. Placing is just gravy. Awesome stuff, Joey.

You did great - and you are in the meca of Bodybuilding - tough competition. The main thing is that you got in the best condition of your life - as Frank Zane would say - -you already won before you set foot on stage!! I know many people that get within a week or so of the competition and Quit - you never gave up - Great job

Congrats man, you did a great job and seem to be happy. Take a nice rest and then build from there. Remember that you dont have to compete like your training partner. Give your body some rest in betwen shows. GREAT JOB

Thanks, Guys - and Ripped, yes - I'm taking a bit of a break - down to 3 full-body w/o's per week for a few weeks.

Thinking of doing 3 shows next year. Aiming to START the cut at 10% - that should get me down where I belong.

Plotting out my strategy for next year right now. Would like to be onstage at 190# and leaner - ambitious, but not out of the question. Definitely started the carb-up too late and too little - my training partner & I both came in flat. But it was a good first experience. The judging was fair - in fact, I'd pretty much sorted out the top 4 at registration.

Joey, you looked 10x better than I did my first show. Good job and keep us informed on how your progress goes thru the year

Thanks, Ripped....

How many times on the platform before you really began nailing the body fat thing? 2? 3? more? You sure have it down now!

Joey

ya it took me 3 shows to properly learn my diet. Since then I have it down. But I can rememeber how flat I was on my first show. Man it sucked but still felt great being on stage. The second show I ate the wrong portion of foods and still came in flat. After that I got it down and weighed everything out and kept my diet as simple as possible. Allot of people use a bunch of diff foods and shakes. My job allows me to just use food but I realize it is not always possible to do that. However it made a huge differance. Cutting the sugar out was huge. But the more you compete the more you learn your own body. Just because it worked for someone it may not work for you. But its all pretty simple minus that last week of hell. You know how to get in touch with all of us when you start getting ready next year. As for now just enjoy food and lift strong.

Read the whole thread and id like to say congratulations.. you came in to the comp in the best shape of your life.. and as someone already mentioned.. you won before you even step foot on the stage. Great shape at 54yo.

I hope this doesn't sound gay...not that there's anything wrong with that...

...but you have some pretty sweet propotioned/defined calves in that 3rd picture.

Great job on the competition. I'm still hesitating on stepping on stage. Hopefully next year.

But you're quite an inspiration bro...keep up the good work.

Thanks, PI - can't take too much credit for them, though. Italian. Generations of grape stomping had to have SOME effect. ;) - Joey
