Correct Benching Form

Hi, I am eighteen years old, and have been experimenting with my bench for to see what effectively builds my chest and strength equally. I recently went to a personal trainer and got a couple free training sessions, and she told me that I was using too much back with my bench, she had be bench on a universal machine with my feet hooked in straps hanging from the machine and I struggled to get 185 for 5. She told me that, that was my pure bench strength using all strength, but when I am at the gym I can get 225x10 using my form. If I want to continue to build strength and my chest, should I continue using my form, which I learned from my dad, who powerlifted for many years, or should I try to bench with more isolation on my chest?

Thanks

Stick with your dad's powerlifting form, I don't know what's up with trainers trying to reinvent the lift

When I do the powerlifting form I feel just as much of a pump in my chest and I feel equally as sore too. Thanks for the advice GeovanniG, thats sort of what I was leaning towards anyway.

I'm confused with the straps? She put your feet in stirrups or what? Not supposed to use a gynochologist table for benching o.0

Benchpress is a full body lift, do it like your dad showed, back arched, shoulderblades squeezed together, feet driving into the ground.

Here is a great series put together by Dave Tate on proper bench press form for those of us who are not as fortunate to have an experienced/well trained person helping learn the movement.

I was once told concentrate on my heels staying on the floor, my abs staying tight and the weight going upwards, seems to work for me.

Glad you liked it. I also posted the "so you think you can squat" series here in the training forum. If you haven't already, you should check those videos out too.

Yea man great info, completely changed my form and I'm moving a lot more weight as a result. I'll def check out that series.
