Core/abs

Hi all I'm looking for some advice on training my core and abs. Specifically what exercises, reps and frequency is best to encourage hypertrophy of the abdominals. Currently doing a slight calorie surplus and would like to use some of those calories to help develop the area. I'm fully aware I'll need to cut to get them to show up, but at the moment I'm looking for advice on how to grow them even if they are hidden under a layer of fat. I'm doing a 5x5 routine at the moment btw. I do find front squats do engage my core alot but rarely feel it in deadlifts, looking to add some core/abs focused exercises to bring up the area more.

With abs I go more for strength and stability. Cable crunches, KB around the body passes, flag raises. With a 5x5 routine you probably already get enough for stimulation with squats, deads, and most bent rows, as long as your form is correct that is.

I definitely feel it with squats, not with bent over rows or deadlifts, i'll have to recheck my form. Any tips on how not to get a huge ass while deadlifting and squating would be appreciated, it would be just my luck if the only muscle that got huge was my glutes lol. I've only been doing the 5x5 routine for 2 months or so, just graduated on to the 20kg plates so maybe it's a need to lift heavier thing.
