Combining 5/3/1 with PHAT

Legend
Might be a dumb question and a bad idea all together, but does anyone have an opinion on combining 5/3/1 and PHAT. For example, on PHAT's Power Upper Day, do a 5/3/1 bench and ohp and lower power do 5/3/1 on squats and deads. The rest of the work would be done following PHAT protocol. Seems like it might be overkill.

The rest of the work is essentially accessory work right? Might as well give it a go, could be a good way to switch it up from time to time!

I have ran both and loved both, running them together might be iffy. think of each routine as a recipe for chocolate chip cookies, if you start mixing recipes it might not even taste like a chocolate chip cookie any more. you get what i am saying? #analogyoftheyear

1 question, why?

They are both proven programs. By combining them you will have to change them and then you are not doing a proven program anymore.

I would suggest getting the beyond 5/3/1 book and pulling a template from there that is what you are looking for and then you can still be on a proven program.

I would agree with 5/3/1 you have to have patients though it starts of REAL slow, but i loved it when i ran it, straight to the point and i know the book is pretty cheap on amazon, i like to highlight notes and take notes in a book. I think they have a PDF form too.

I actually had really fast progress with 5/3/1 the first time I ran it. Then, strength started to slowly decline or stall. Probably due to me cutting. Also, I was looking for a program that hit each bodypart twice a week, which is why I switched to PHAT. I just loved the 5/3/1 part for bench, squat, dead, and ohp.

You know the old saying. F*c it! Try it for a bit in the way you present it. You might stumble upon something that works well for you. After all, almost all programs take principles from things lifters have been doing for decades. You might come up with something new. Or if may not work. Haha go for it

Lol! The t-nation.com forum is the best link from that Google search.

My opinion. That program is a train wreck and exactly why you don't change a proven program.
