calories are just calories, right? wrong

ive done all types of diets, high carb, low carb, high protein, ultra super high protein, but was somehow always scared of trying high fat and never really ate more than the rda fat intake, although usually i used to eat much less than that. in my country people are scared of fat and i grew up that way also.

well what i wanted to say is that although people will just tell you 'its all calories at the end of the day, no matter where you get them from', ive come to the conclusion that that cannot be further from the truth, at least in my case.

on a regular carb or high carb diet with adequate protein for my weight, and low fat (lets call it the typically mediterranean diet), i would maintain at 2200 kcals. i am super active, train for hours every day. i walk, run, swim (in summer), cycle (have no car)... build things. have just finished moving all my stuff from one island to another into my new home. i do everything...everyday. so im hyper in a way, and need to make up for the calories i burn.

on super high protein (300g and over), lowish or low carb and very low fat diet (unhealthy, i know, but it gets me super cut, although with serious gi issues!) i would need to eat over 3000 kcals if not 3500 to maintain.

but now that im on keto, i found i was losing weight FAST at anything below 4000 kcals (serious). the past three days ive been doing 4500 (all in one meal) and not feeling full after, but ive been gaining back what i lost before (am speaking of muscle fullness) with minimal fat gain, if any. so i figured i need at least 4300 to MAINTAIN.

and my gi issues, issues which ive had all my life, are strangely disappearing on keto...

anyway, thats what i wanted to point out.
whats the reasoning behind this? anyone experience something similar? i mean, carbs and protein are 4 kcals per gram, fat is 9. so in theory youd need less fat on a high fat diet to get your total kcals, but i found out i need more kcals on keto??

pardon my quick, slightly confusing post, but im writing this as the thought crossed my mind while busy making a 3000 kcal keto sludge bowl and my hands are full of peanut butter, lindt chocolate and other goodness :P
