Hey guys, it's me again. Before you all jump on me and say "caffeine = cortisol = catabolics", hear me out.
We all know the dangers of caffeine and how it can increase cortisol levels and have a negative effect on building muscle, but we also know that caffeine can have positive effects as well, like vasodilation through increased heart rate and helping give someone the motivation and "energy" to get them to the gym. Idk how many people here have read any of the Thrawn books by Timothy Zhan, but the Grand Admiral once said that "with a little ingenuity, any obstacle can become an asset." So I got to thinking- since caffeine stimulates the parietal cells of the stomach to increase stomach acid tremendously, why not use it as a mass gaining catalyst? I mean, caffeine increases your heart rate (allowing nutrients to be shipped out to the muscles more quickly), speeds up the metabolism through stimulation of the parietal cells, and can even increase focus. Unfortunately, caffeine articles are so diverse and opinionated that it's difficult to get all the facts about it, but my biology professor (a retired doctor of emergency medicine) once made the statement that it takes about 300mg of caffeine to cause a cortisol spike.
So, if someone wanted to increase stomach acid (to make them not only hungrier more often but to give their metabolism a little edge), all they'd have to do is take 50mg (well, that's the amount that gets my stomach pumping, but I only weigh 185 lbs at 9% body fat) about 20 minutes before a meal. I've been experimenting with this a bit lately and have noticed a slight increase in strength (curling 50 lb dumbbells as opposed to 45's), but it's still too early to tell if it's having a profound effect on muscle growth. If you guys think it would have potential, I plan on doing a 2-year study on this (taking no supplements other than the 50mg of caffeine, INCLUDING whey protein), then reporting back.
