Building a house

enhanced

Well-known member
My wife & I are ready to upgrade. We met w/ a builder last week & like what he does, but I'd also like to save a few bucks. I've heard it can be quite a bit cheaper if I sub-contract it & do it myself. I know nothing about this, but if it would be worth my time, I'd be willing to research it & figure it all out.

Does anybody have any first hand experience out there? Good or bad. The more I think about this, the more interested I am.

Thanks

I had a buddy that did alot of the stuff himself and saved a boatload of money. I think he did the tile work, drywall, and electrical himself.

Yeah, I was thinking about going w/ concrete floors throught again. I love em, & they're easy.

I've worked on a lot of houses where the home owner was the general contractor. If you have the time and know-how to get things done- great! If not, then you might want to look into a general. The time line of when things need done and what order is a major part of building a house. There are a lot of people that are still working on building their house years after starting and still living in another house. Making two house payments is very rough and it can also put a heavy burden on the marriage if it's drawn out that long. I'm not trying to discourage you, I am just pointing out things I've seen in the 16+ years of construction.

Going to do more research on this. Just found out that the value on all the homes in our subdv has dropped considerably more than what we first heard... Ugghhh.
