Bracing Core Properly

I'm trying to gain more information about how to brace my core more properly so I don't injure myself. I feel like I'm doing something wrong or my core muscles aren't strong enough. Are there any tips, videos, or tricks to tell if I am doing it right or how to do it right.
 
Pull air into your belly and push out against your belly until you feel your lumbar flex. Maintain this position despite the discomfort and dizziness. You may exhale, but you will need to reset every 2-3 twos or so.
 
2-3 twos? Can you explain that a bit more?
