Best probiotic?

Most people paid from the "company" vote for Gut Health here. It's a useless supplement. You NEED at least 15 billion to 75 billion LIVE cultures to have any benefit on your body. Also, make sure the supplement you choose has lots of L's before the name, i.e. L-(name), and at least 10 or more strains of bacteria.

You really think Genomyx has gone around paying the 20+ forum members in this thread alone who have vouched for the product? If I could link this sale to aware another forum without getting banned there the sale would be done by now and lots of people would be pissed they weren't able to stock up on it.

I'm not even sure what to make of the bold...

Streptococcus thermophilus
Organic Shadow said:
One interesting genetic characteristic is, although it does produce a cell wall, it lacks the genes to make certain surface proteins other bugs in the human body may use to hide from the immune system. So theres virtually no risk of this bacteria contributing to opportunistic infection of mucosal tissue by other pathogenic enterococcus strains. Makes sense considering it has one of the smallest genomic compositions of lactic acid bacteria. It's still in the same family as many lactobacilli and with similar G+C ratio (40%) in the DNA. It has the ability to withstand high temperatures often used during fermentation and processing (thermo=heat, philia=loving) It is considered one of the most commercially important lactic acid bacteria. In fact, the USDA states that from 1998 showed that more than 2.24 billion pounds of Mozzarella cheese and 1.37 billion pounds of yogurt were produced, for almost five million dollars in consumer value.

So why is it important as a probiotic? Streptococcus thermophilus also produces exopolysaccharides which are responsible for the texture of fermented milk and the reason we have reduced fat milks because of their ability to separate the fatty compounds in milk. Have you been wondering why I've had better digestion of cheeses? Because this Strep species can break down casein pretty well - the main protein in many dairy products like cheese. It's often used in the production of reduced-fat cheeses compared to other strains for more rich variations of cheese. When I say "lactic acid bacteria" what I mean is that it can break down latose into lactic acid - very beneficial for people who are intolerant.

In addition - this bacteria can also fight cancer!!!! By preventing transformation of nitrates into cancer-causing nitrites

Some quick bits on 2 of the 3 strains that don't begin with "L's" that are clearly effective.

Every bit of Gut Health is in there for a reason and even though I can't share any specific numbers I assure you there is no reason we would put out a product without it expecting to do its job. Why would anyone put out a probiotic, especially a company like Genomyx that has worked long and hard to develop a fan base with products that do work, if it wasn't going to provide some ergogenic value? It's not like some pre workout we loaded with stims and some odd herbs and we're trying to pimp the stim high, no we're selling a probiotic. That market for these isn't as huge as most supplements and if you're going to put one it better be fawkin awesome or why would anyone buy it again. Thats why it keeps selling out, cause people love it, cause it works.

I hear itzDodge nudes fetch a premium on the black market.

Lol. SAN is one of the few companies I trust 100% and am not afraid to put my name behind. There really is no need for free stuff, I was kidding and the fact that SAN offers 100% HPLC is a true testament to the brand.

Liked! And I will write something hopefully if I have time!

Also, posted a little about gut health and my log here ;)

I meant useless as a probiotic supplement. Thread topic: best probiotic (Sure, Gut Health probably does ease some stomach discomfort for people in the proprietary portion of the mix, but from a probiotic point, its bottom of the barrel, useless and worthless)

congrats on the SAN gig.

between the FB promotion and the NP sale, everyone on earth should have a bottle in hand... think of a world with no farting.

Your going to have to back up a statement like that with something. Gut Health is an excellent probiotic with complementary stains unlike the majority of probiotics available.

Should I keep probiotics in my fridge or is it fine to leave it on my desk with the rest of my supplements?

Have used Gut Health and enjoyed it. But, I like to take a wider variety of probiotic types. I have also used Jarro-dophilus which is a good and I trust Jarrow products. Currently I drink a lot of Kefir and Yakult (which is also a single probiotic).

In summary these are all beneficial in their own ways:
Gut Health
Jarro-dophilus
Kefir
Yakult
Other fermented foods

Most should be fine on your desk, just don't leave them in your car on a hot day or situations such as that.

I've been hearing a lot about kefir lately. Where does one purchase this at?

Some people prefer to make their own at home, I am too lazy and don't have the time to do all that. I buy mine at Trader Joe's or main supermarket chains around me (Von's, Ralph's, etc). I live in Los Angeles though, so other areas of the country may not be up on this health/hippie fad yet. Only thing to be careful of is drinking too much of it, along with the inulin that is added to most of the store-bought kefir, can cause some constipation.

Lifeway is a main brand that is carried in most stores and I like to try to get the Invalid Link Removed that obviously have higher probiotic counts (hence concentrated) than the bigger bottles, this also helps avoid the constipation. The bigger bottles of the flavored variety also carry quite a few carbs, so the smaller bottles obviously help avoid that issue also. I am not the biggest fan of the non-flavored variety, which I drink on occasion, but tastes quite sour.

Look up some of the benefits, there are many and I have always worried about my digestion since getting an appendectomy when I was 18 and having some other health issues which caused me to be on antibiotics for awhile. Obviously some placebo involved, but I feel it has helped a great deal with digestion issues I had/have.

Thanks for the info. Wonder if Fresh Market or places like Wholefoods would have those(probably). If not, then Trader Joe's will have to be it. I'm an east coaster, so the closest Trader Joe's is about 5 hr away or so.

Whole Foods will have it. More and more places are carrying it, usually by the yogurt.

A few different reasons, but mainly it's under-dosed (you want to shoot for 15-75 billion cfu's per dose for complete benefit, not to mention you'll want at least 10 or more good strains including the more important ones i.e., Lactoxxxx... to be a worthy best Probiotic supplement). I'm not trying to bash Gut Health, it clearly sells as 'Gut Health' so I'm sure it accomplishes this feat, but the topic is on 'best Probiotic' and I just have to state again that its fairly useless in that regard.

I am going to jump on the EVCO wagon soon. I have been meaning to for a while. To many health benefits not to try it out.

It's great! I think you'll love it. I know members here do like it. And there are a lot of anecdotal stories about it.

Is the point of taking a probiotic not to improve "gut health"? reduce gas, bloating, etc..

If you aren't going to post any scientific backing to anything you post especially in regards to putting down a companies product, even it be with good intentions, then you're a waste of time...the L thing is retarded...

Bacillus subtilis
In animal models, B. subtilis lowered morbidity and mortality due to E. coli infection, reduced susceptibility to C. rodentium and salmonella infection, and improved mucosal barrier function (Alexopoulos et al., 2004; D’Arienzo et al., 2006; Fujiya et al., 2007; Knap et al., 2011). B. subtilis positively modulated inflammation via reduced colonic inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, 1L-1beta, IL-6 and IFN-gamma) and increase anti-inflammatory cytokine secretion (IL-I0 and TGF-beta) (Selvam et al., 2009). B. subtilis has also been shown to protect mucosal epithelia against inflammatory and oxidative damage by activating cyto-protective heat shock proteins (Fujiya et al., 2007; Williams, 2007). A novel, yet very appealing finding to probiotic supplementation may be that B. subtilis can improve body composition. In growing pigs, addition of B. subtilis to a nutrient dense enhanced lean body mass gain, reduced fat mass gain, and improved nutrient assimilation in a dose dependent manner (Alexopoulos et al., 2004; Meng et al., 2004).

Bacillus coagulans
B. coagulans is a spore producing bacterium. When exposed to low pH, such as in the stomach, these spores are activated, absorb water, and then germinate (Sander et al., 2003). B. coagulans proliferates and colonized in the colon and therefore is capable of exerting effects on the individual. B. coagulans has been used to treat IBD and Crohn’s disease, increase influenza immunity, improve autoimmune diseases, and reduce inflammation.
The beneficial effects of B. coagulans are most likely exerted via reductions in pathogenic bacteria colonization and adhesion. B. coagulans has been shown to exhibit anti-microbial activity in the face of pathogenic bacteria, preventing disturbances in the colonic microbiota ecosystem (Honda et al., 2011). By competing with pathogenic bacteria, B. coagulans is able to maintain colonic homeostasis. In human studies, B. coagulans has been demonstrated to reduce bloating and abdominal discomfort in patients with IBD (Hun, 2009). In humans without IBD, B. coagulans has been shown reduce post-prandial gas and bloating, and improve the quality of life and reduce GI symptoms (Kalman et al., 2009). B. coagulans also exerts positive metabolic effects. In human trials, B. coagulans was shown to significantly lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol while slightly increasing HDL cholesterol (Mohan et al., 1990).

Streptococcus thermophilus
S. thermophilus is one of the most important bacteria in the food industry and used to produce yogurt, cooked cheeses, and soft cheeses. S. thermophilus has been shown to survive in a 0.4% oxgall concentration (highest bile concentration of duodenum) and a pH of 2 for 3 hours, demonstrates a high adherence to the intestinal mucosa, and is highly antibiotic resistant (Khali, 2009). S. thermophilus is a viable bacterium that enhances the composition of colonic microbiota (Liu et al., 2010), and therefore has the ability to exert probiotic effects such as inflammatory reductions, inhibition of carcinogen production, enhanced immunity, and as a possible treatment in chemo-therapy induced intestinal mucositis.

By reducing cytokines that play significant roles in inflammatory disease, S. thermophilus has been suggested a possible therapy in intestinal and systemic disease. S. thermophilus has been shown to suppress IL-17 expression and production by splenocytes (Oquita et al., 2011). S. thermophilus has been used to treat chronic gastritis by reducing IFN-ƴ and TNF-α, and increasing the thickness of the gastric mucus gel layer (Rodriguez et al., 2010).

S. thermophilus enhances the immune system via diverse set of mechanisms. First, S. thermophilus is able to transfer genes (CRISPR3/Cas) directly to pathogenic bacteria, such as E. coli (Sapranauskas et al., 2011). CRISPR3/Cas cleaves bacteriophage DNA, and thus provides protection against viral gene transfer and bacterial infection (Barrangou et al., 2007). Second, S. thermophilus secretes antimicrobial bacteriocins that directly prevent the adhesion and colonization of pathogenic bacteria (Gilbreth & Somkuti, 2005). Finally, in a mouse model, S. thermophilus stimulated T-cells when presented with pathogens (Shimosato et al, 2009). Because S. thermophilus is able to positively influence the colonic microbiota, S. thermophilus may be an important supplement following the use of antibiotics, during times of increased mental stress, and prior to/following travel to polluted cities.

That should settle your argument based on bacteria beginning with L's....

Recommended colonizing units is so variable based on strains used and delivery system used that your argument there also has a gaping hole in it...

Natures way primadophilus optima. The best probiotic I have ever used. Independent tests counted 35 billion cfu from 14 strains at time of testing, not of manufacture. Also contains FOS, which is prebiotic. Plus it is enteric coated

I'd be wary of a probiotic containing S. Thermophilus that was not enteric coated as I have doubts whether that strain can even survive going through the stomach

I also found Theralac to be very, very good. Also Dr. Ohhira's is well worth the investment. My gut responds best to the Primadiphilus Optima though so that's what I stick with.

True, and for that reason alone, I just ordered some myself ...... lol but I thought this was biased thread review, but I've learned other-wise. Gut Health does work.

True, well I have no scientific information, other than, I watched Dr. Oz ................ lmao ..j/k ..No..but your correct, I'm wrong, I apologize. Mostly I just googled... came across Dr. Mercola and whoever else stressing about this and that.... Anyhow, I've ordered some Gut Health myself since then. Sorry for the miss-information on my part. ~..'

I already orderd 3 months of a diff probiotic :(. I'm going to try that one as my first probiotic prob going to do double dose to in 45 days I will order gut health! lol

you don't know me, sure, but please take this at face value... genomyx will never employ shills to post up about our products, and we'll never suggest that our users/supporters post biased feedback. we expect, respect, and encourage honest discussion of our products... when our customers have a criticism, we take it into consideration. that's how supplement companies become better.

glad you came around, though. ;)

It's cool as long as you take note of a few things, most TV 'Doctors' are most likely trying to pimp something and they'll generally say anything for sales but thats tv man. A lot of websites out there have lots of information and not all of it is correct, some of its outdated as well and that makes deciding what works and what doesn't hard sometimes. Thats where real research should begin, start paying less attention to articles scattered across the web and look into scientific journals or just use google scholar which should generally remove most of the ****ty places to go for legitimate info. Also know what Smitty said, we would never get someone to pimp for us or especially keep them on retainer lol. Some of our biggest fans of Gut Health used it first way back in the day, when it was only one strain iirc, and they loved it then and love it even more now. Genomyx isn't about buying anyone's support we want to earn it and we will do everything we can to do so.
