E-MAX (Ergomax) worked well for me. I am presently using SD and am thus far happy with it.
I'd say E-MAX is best utilized during a bulk... but I'd also think SD is too... and I am using it during a cut.
Of course, as most everyone will tell you, diet and other factors determine more of that than the substance you are using. Though there are some substances that tend to lend themselves moreso to one use than the other. Prostan.. for example, I believe is best utilized during a cut or perhaps during what some people call a 'body recomp' mode.
Also, I think Phera-Plex is supposed to be similar to E-MAX, but I'm not sure about that.
