Ashwagandha increases estrogen?

Just came across this study from 2016. Granted, it is in rats and I don't believe has been replicated in humans but it was interesting nonetheless.

Effect of Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal on Sex Hormone and Gonadotropin Levels in Addicted Male Rats

* Ashwagandha treatment in the control group caused a significant increase in the estrogen level

* FSH had a statistically significant rise only in the WS-treated control group compared to the control group

* This finding chimes in with the result of another study in which the estrogen level was increased following the administration of WS (20). The same study also reported that WS might increase sexual steroids such as estrogen and progesterone via the stimulation of the hypothalamus-hypophysis axis.

If testosterone increases, there is going to be a good chance of estrogen increasing along with it.

Wow, this is funny. I JUST received a bottle yesterday, that I purchased to relieve my anxiousness for an upcoming job interview. I used Examine.com, for my research, and didn't see any studies related to raising estrogen levels. You will however find that it is very beneficial for weight lifters, in many ways. Maybe I missed something. Thanks for the info, I'll have to check it out.

Everything I have read points to only the balancing of estrogen and progesterone in addition to raising LH, Testosterone, and Serum DHEA among other positives.

Did these rats have cancer? I have read it affects the cancerous cells.

As is shown in Figure 1, morphine addiction reduced the estrogen level (22.76 pg/mL) compared to the control group (50.56 pg/mL). Whereas WS treatment in the control group caused a significant increase (P<0.05) in the estrogen level (86.89 pg/ mL), it had no significant effect on the estrogen level of the addicted male rats.

The progesterone levels in all the experimental groups are illustrated in Figure 2. The progesterone level was increased in the WS-treated group (66.28 pmol/mL) and decreased in the addicted group (43.21 pmol/mL) insignificantly compared to the control group (54.24 pmol/mL).

Figure 3 shows that the testosterone level was decreased by morphine administration from 0.399 ng/mL to 0.112 ng/mL in the control group signifi- cantly (P<0.05). On the other hand, WS consump- tion in the addicted group inhibited the decrease in testosterone significantly (0.289 ng/mL, P<0.05)

The data on FSH are depicted in Figure 4, which shows that FSH had a statistically significant rise (P<0.05) only in the WS-treated control group (0.422 mIU/mL) compared to the control group (0.299 mIU/mL).

The data on LH levels in all the groups ((FigFig .5) revealed that there was a significant decrease in the LH level in the addicted male rats (0.0125 mIU/mL) compared to the control group (0.191 mIU/ mL). However, WS administration inhibited a decrease in the LH levels in the addicted rats significantly.

Great study material there; thank you. This stuff should be celebrated upon! I'm on day 2 and can tell that I am more easily allowing certain stresses to slide. I am hoping that the drop in cortisol helps me with fat loss and am looking forward to reaping the other awesome benefits as well.

You're very welcome! It is amazing and I use it daily.

bump

also, ashwagandha seems to decrease FSH in both rats and males. Should one be worried about this?

and after reading some of the popular ashwagandha studies, in the discussion portion:

"Elevated levels of FSH have been correlated with damage to the seminiferous tubules. FSH has been suggested as a marker of Sertoli cell function and spermatogenesis."

So excessive FSH = potentially not good.

Everything I have seen on ashwagandha promotes it as an ingredient that decreases cortisol, stress, and increases both lean mass and testosterone levels. That is why a lot of companies are putting it in their supplements, especially testboosters such as AlphaMax XT, M-Test, and Double-T. I will post some of the studies I have come across.

If healthy people take 3-5 ashwagandha capsules every day, their muscle strength and lean body mass increase and their fat percentage decreases. In addition, taking this herb, which is used in the ayurveda tradition, reduces the chance of cardiovascular disease. Researchers at the ICMR Advanced Centre for Reverse Pharmacology in Traditional Medicine discovered this.

If infertile men take three capsules containing Ashwagandha – Latin name Withania somnifera – every day for a couple of months, their testosterone level rises by 17 percent and their sperm cell concentration increases by 167 percent. Doctors at Mahalaxmi Clinic in Mumbai, India write about it in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

This study reports that ashwagandha supplementation is associated with significant increases in muscle mass and strength and suggests that ashwagandha supplementation may be useful in conjunction with a resistance training program.

Majority of the volunteers did not show any noteworthy baseline symptoms. No abnormality was detected on clinical examination during the study period. No clinically significant change was found in pulse, temperature, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Average mean body weight and BMI of the volunteers did not show significant change throughout the study.

If bodybuilders or other strength athletes take ashwagandha they build up more muscle and lose fat more quickly, write Indian researchers in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. The researchers tested a daily dose of 600 mg ashwagandha extract on men were doing weight training for the first time in their lives.

The findings of this study suggest that a high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract safely and effectively improves an individual's resistance towards stress and thereby improves self-assessed quality of life.

Thank you, sir. All, much like what I have read; hence why I have decided to make it a staple, in my supplement arsenal.

Those Indians have some real kick ass studies on ashwagandha. I wonder why?
