L-carnitine in multiple studies are shown to increase cardiovascular risks . From what I have been researching it was pointing toward the reason a diet high In red meat can cause heart problems was not because of the fat but because of the l-carnitine content . So which one is right ..? I'm confused

I think it is fine as long as you take a probiotic or have a vegetable rich diet. I don't remember all the details but the issue had to do with bacteria in the gut.

"One of the study's biggest surprises, Hazen said, was how large an impact vegan and vegetarian diets had on the formation of TMAO from carnitine; people in the study who did not habitually eat red meat did not produce the plaque-forming TMAO even when they were given large doses of carnitine in the form of a steak or a supplement. "

The main thing is TMAO is only produced when meat eating bacteria is found in the intestins. TMAO was not produced even when cartinite was ingested in veagans or people who didn´t eat red meat.

So skip red meat ''eat chickin'' and fish and carnitine should be fine.
