Article: You Can't Out Exercise A Bad Diet

B.s I do eat healthy for the most part, but ive gone through periods where I just eat everything in site while working out a crazy amount. My bf stayed 9-10% and I gained muscle..

Now I never ate mcdonalds 3 meals a day, but still strongly feel like you can beat a diet with excercise

I would still agree with the article on this one, obviously without knowing what you eat I can't disagree with your opinion but i have guessed from what your saying is that you eat healthy 80% of the time maybe?
Thats actually better for long term weight management than eating strictly 100% of the time as you need the extra calories and the high calorie intake controls certain hormones that contribute to muscle gain as you said you still get, the article is saying as a complete diet if your food is poor then you wont be able to grow muscle effectively and also gain too much bf%

Yes 70-80% what I should....I really shouldnt argue bc I strongly agree the best gains come with a solid diet. Really I was just saying it is still possible to make gains

Michael phelps is a good example of why this article is bogus. Yet it's still better to eat healthy for overall health.

100% agree with this article. Not saying you can't enjoy a cheat meal or day once in awhile but overall you have to eat healthy. I weighed 325 at one point. I was able to get down to 255 with diet alone. I'm now 200 at around 15% bf and dropping from finally cleaning up the diet.

Pretty good article but a bit oversimplified. Yes for sure the amount of food people eat is responsible for the rising obesity figures. I've said it before and I'll say it again here, it's economic in nature. The price of food has dropped drastically since the 70's, and surprise surprise waistlines have increased since then at a corresponding rate. However, that's about statistics and the behaviour of entire populations, not individuals. I think if the obesity numbers were broken down by age groups, we'd find that the 40+ age group probably represents the overweight by a disproportionate amount. The simple fact is, it's easier to stay lean for 20 and 30 year olds than 40+. In fact I think for really young people, say <20, exercise probably is 80-90% of the leanness equation, for 20-30 yrs 60-70% of the leanness equation, and for 40+ 10-20%. So the importance of exercise w.r.t. controlling weight is huge for kids, but diminishes as we get older, until diet nearly entirely trumps exercise. So, good article, but not terribly comprehensive.
