Article: The Commercial Gym, Exposed!

Ya well a lot of trainers train clients under the table as much as possible to screw the gym over. Personal training is a joke anyway

Personal training is not a joke when done properly by an educated trainer. There are so many people that have no idea how to use a treadmill let alone a resistance machine. A 75 year old women told to exercise more by her doctor has no idea where to even start. A properly educated trainer can help these people and educate them to the point that if they choose to they can progress on their own. Trainers certified to work with special populations are also an asset to those that need them. Trainers are there for the masses who do not have a clue what to do at a gym.

That being said it is an unregulated industry and there are plenty of terrible trainers out there. Some one with an associates or bachelors in exercise science with a ACSM or NSCA certification is not a joke.

Personal Training is a joke?

I would unfortunately have to say that most personal trainers aren't that knowledgeable.. This happens to be the case because it's too easy to get certified as a personal trainer. I know there are some really great ones out there too but they are few and far between unfortunately. There's at least 10 bad ones for one good one.

I completely agree, man! Specially here in Brazil!
But to say that personal training is a joke...

I've been an ACSM trainer for 18 years and have seen my share of good and bad trainers. I've also been a realtor for 14 years which requires a state license. And even though it only takes a 75 hour classroom course to obtain, I could still lose it if a serious infraction occurs. Trainers should be licensed. It's the only way to ensure some semblance of uniformity.
