Article: The Best And Worst Of Crossfit

As someone that can't stand the elitist attitude and general mindset surrounding Crossfit, I really enjoyed this article. It cleared up some misconceptions in my mind without the bias I have built up.

What I'm getting from this article is the biggest hurdle with any form of 'exercise' is you're going to have to accept a certain plateau (for us everyday full time workers anyway.)

I've never done crossfit. Wanted too but $100+ a month for 2 sessions a week is a bit much. I like my $20 gym membership and doing interval training at the local park is free.

I can't wait for the crossfit fad to end. Get these monkeys out of my way at the gym.

At least they don't like to interact with the rest of us and usually stay in their own "boxes". It's only when they come around mugging and kipping all over the place that I actually even notice them.

Now the CF chicks can all stay. They are great to look at.

Yeah them chicks can kip on my dick all day hahaha

As an avid CrossFitter, I think a lot of the "Ugly" in CrossFit is due to the individual box and not the sport as a whole. At my box, CrossFit Dynamo, WODs are carefully programmed with RX, A, B and C scales to enable multiple levels of fitness and ability to enjoy the same WOD. If futher modifications are needed, the coaches support this approach and recommend alternatives.

At another local box, there is just heavy weight and high reps with little regard for the individual athlete. In this environment, people will get hurt.

The "Ugly" is a very generalized assessment of a box/coach specific problem.

I do crossfit. I do it because it does focuse on strength training with barbells. I also do it because I found a good gym (I can't call the boxes either) with two really good coaches. I don't think I would do it at another gym. I go for te barbells. I just do the "wod" because I feel obligated. I get there early for some extra time lifting, because that's why it take to get the results I want. Cross fit is fairly flawed, but good coaching helps. None of the other gyms in town facilitate olympic weight lifting. So crossfit is my only option until they catch up.

True there

I agree, sadly there are more and more coaches becoming certified and dont have a freaking clue but believe X-fit is just sweat and muscle ups.

This article hits home on the problem and doesnt completely bash the "sport". Will still be a few years before we see where this thing really goes IMO

I've been lifting for over 25 years now and I checked out a couple of crossfit gyms to maybe try something different for cardio. These people are idiots. They have no idea that people have different strengths and weaknesses, They think a 45 year old should keep up with a 25 year old. Their "trainers" believe that because they did a certification class one weekend and they have been doing crossfit for 6 months they know best how to train me and my body with my history of injuries and current limitations. I spent 2 weeks working out with them. Broke all of their lifting records. Went back to to a real gym and using MMA to mix up cardio.

Ive been saying this about xfit for years. Its a great business model but just like anything else (or business for that matter) if it grows to fast it will develop growing pains. Thats whats happening right now. Its too big for its own britches and there are still way to many people jumping onto a sinking ship and nobody is willing to find the hole. Until the inherent problems of xfit are fixed-were going to continue to have this debate.
