I'm 50 and I've been doing this for 6 years. I'm also a bit of a slow learner because I spent a lot of time lifting heavy and injuring my shoulders, elbows, knees and just about every other tendon site in my body. I also have a totally crapped out back. Finally about 1 year ago the sports doc told me that bad **** would happen if I continued to lift heavy.
I dropped 16 kgs (about 35 pounds) and changed my lifting style to 'old man'. I do 3 weeks of 10-15 reps to almost failure and I do one body part per day. I lift 6 days a week and do light stretching and mobility work on the seventh. Every fourth week I left heavy but only for 'safe' lifts. For me that means DB bench, squats (front or back) etc, nothing that forces me into a specific movement e.g. BB bench because they trash my joints.
I'm now starting to see the best results I've had since I started lifting. Strength is not quite as good but I figure I'll still be the strongest guy in the old folks home.
