Thanks Great Article. I have Insulin resistance and have recently started a drug called Metformin to help with this. It increases insulin sensitivity. After reading this I think that If I took it at the right time, in relation to my strength training, it could be beneficial. I usually take it in the morning and then go and train about an hour later. I am now wondering if there is a better time to take this. I could discuss this with my Dr, but I have found that Drs seem to have a negative view of weight training for women. I have been told not to do it and to just do cardio. I accept they just "don't get it", so I am wondering if there is any advice here on when to take the metformin in relation to training. My Dr has told me to take it at a convenient time, so I am able to take it whenever I want. When is best to take it in relation to training, so as not to actually go against my body's muscle growth?

Metformin should be taken just prior to carb consumption. It limits the uptake of sugar in the small intestine.

Thank you:)

Metformin has nothing to do with the absorption of glucose / sugar in the small intestine. It effects how sensitive the liver is to glucose and it's effects are directly within the liver, not the intestine. Metformin does not effect absorption. Interesting that misinformation is coming from a Doctor on this forum:

People should be researching their own drugs that they are taking, not taking advice from people on the internet.

These generic sites only give you partial info.
How Metformin Works

Metformin helps the body to control blood sugar in several ways. The drug helps type 2 diabetics respond better to their own insulin, lower the amount of sugar created by the liver, and decreasing the amount of sugar absorbed by the intestines.

When taken alone, Metformin is unlikely to cause hypoglycemia or weight gain, but when taken in conjunction with insulin or a sulfonylurea both of these side effects are more likely.

Great article. Great read. Eat some damn food post workout. Now fight go the death over what to consume.....and....GO!

Thank you. I have researched, but the info is very generic, as you say. It is also very focused on Diabetics. I am not diabetic but have a very severe case of PCOS. I have finished having children, so the infertility is not a problem for me. I am only concerned with the insulin resistance, and the fact that I struggle to lose weight unless I am eating around 1400 calories a day. The other issues, take a back seat to the weight issue. In your opinion, will Metformin help me to lose weight? I strength train 3 times per week, and cardio 5 times per week. I understand it is not a miracle drug, but i feel my diet is good, and I exercise well. Thanks in advance.
