Article: Is Changing Routines A Good Idea?

The answer to the question, "Is changing routines a good idea?," depends on one's goals. Are you asking if one can still make progress whilst never switching up anything except volume and weight? Sure, one can make gains, especially of the strength kind (but also physique). One SURELY must also be altering one's diet to make changes, but also I believe that changing up routines is also beneficial (especially when used in conjunction with diet changes).

This article plays it a little hard on the safe side, but if that's what you are going for...

Agreed! But only if your trying not to get hurt! If your trying to change your body change your workout! Im playing semipro this season and I changed up my whole work out to get "football fit". all of my lifts have gone up in weight! So Change it UP! it works and intensity rules!

If you feel that the exercises you do are beneficial to your progress than there are other factors in your workout that can be changed without changing the exercises. Changes such as Order in which you do your exercises, Resting Time, # of Sets, Rep Range and Weight used.

I think changing up exercises has the effect that HST observes -- that muscle gain depends on progressive weight lifting, not on completely maxing out every set. So, changing up the exercises typically has the effect of lowering the intensity and initiating another cycle of progression.
