It's like low box squats...without the box. Doing these with a good amount of weight (and ROM) on the bar looks pretty damn impressive to your average onlooker.
I love paused squats. Similarly to lilcheeks I stumbled on theses accidentally by losing balance at the bottom and it was at that moment that I lowered the weight and decided to go deeper and pause for a few seconds. These have been amazing... now on my third week and my strength, stability and reaction time have all exploded. Definitely a tool to build the arsenal...
Once or twice a year I work in a pause routine for 5-6 weeks and it really increases endurance. I only do it with big movements and generally keep the pause for 3-5 seconds. It's better to start at 50-60% of your ROM and work up because after 4-5 reps, you really start to feel it and get the shakes.
