Article: Defending Crossfit

Fine looking bodies those women have, can't beat a strong female body that still looks feminine!

I think this is right on the money, crossfit is reigniting fitness for a lot of people. It's got flaws but I would encourage anyone who thinks its a joke to try a couple WODs before you speak too loudly. The key to having a successful crossfit experience is to learn before doing. If you don't know how to snatch then learn before using it in a WOD, if you can't do a pull-up, start building yourself up, etc. I spent a month in a box and it was an incredible experience, I now do 2-3 WODs a week to supplement my workouts and keep life interesting.

I have no issue with CF itself because it really is doing a fine service getting people interested in fitness and a good (rare) gym/box does have good trainers and care. I do have an issue with CrossFitters, though. In general, they tend to be very arrogant, close minded, and lack knowledge. They create the douchebag image themselves and live up to it in many instances. The attitude is partially what makes it dangerous, especially when it is the owners and trainers that have it. If they understood that they are not doing any revolutionary and just selling it under a trademark name, they may not feel so high on the horse and enjoy a better image.

The fact is, the top Crossfit athletes do not achieve their status with WODs alone. They use typical bodybuilding and strongman workouts and supplement them with WODs.

I'm wondering if anyone doing crossfit can actually run a 5k without dying. Every time crossfit is mentioned only the fittest bodies are shown.

I have several friends who trained for Ranger school almost entirely with crossfit and running. If done correctly it works very well. For anyone to say it doesn't work or is a joke just is ignorant (not directed at you).

Most people on here wouldn't be able to complete the tougher workouts, so it's easier to call crossfit stupid.

Rob94hawk, I agree. I think if I knew about crossfit before going thru SFAS, it would not have been so physically challenging as it was. Don't get me wrong, I was fit at that time, and I made it thru. Some events, especially during team week might have been easier to maneuver. Ranger school was quite tough as well, but not as tough as SFAS, well for me anyway.

This is ridiculous on several levels. First off, just because someone joined crossfit doesn't mean they can all of a sudden be good runners, just like anything else. Also, if you train for something, you naturally get better at it. CF doesn't run 5ks, but would get you in better shape to complete it in a respectable time. If you are doing it for a while, your cardiovascular is going to improve, as well as your recovery time.

Let's be real here. A 5k is not difficult and I know several powerlifters that do them and they certainly don't train for it.

If you want to get strong or obtain a physique that greek gods would bow to then you power lift or bodybuild. Sure crossfit may get you to obtain those goals eventually but it is NOT the most effective way to do it. Bottom line, friends dont let friends crossfit.

People that are doing cross fit are not interested in building a physique the gods would bow to. The goal is more fitness based.
