Article: Crossfit No More Effective Than Traditional Train

Since when is 3 hours of cardio and 1 hour of strength training a week "traditional?"

Either way, this isn't an argument against crossfit (same results in a fraction of the time!), but an argument that diet is more important than how you exercise.

Im not a proponent of crossfit, but sounds like you can get a lot more work done in a lot less time and be happier about it.

Im still all about the regular weight lifting life bc I actually want muscle and all , but I dont see the argument

This is a terrible article for an argument on either side. CF is simply a faster way to exercise and provides a group atmosphere for those that need the encouragement. It will not make you the strongest, fastest, or in the best shape, but it will get lazy people off of the couch and doing something. For that, I am for it.

It also injures many of these same people because of ego, the group atmosphere, poor programming, and unqualified instructors. Oh, and I think you have to have a ****ty attitude to everyone else that doesn't do crossfit. For that, I think it sucks.

That being said, my wife has done both for many years and prefers crossfit. I saw how the coaches were really messing her up with form and made her switch to a place with an actual trained coach in oly strength training. Night and day difference. So there are good places.

Another embarrassingly ignorant globo gymer post showing zero understanding of anything having to do with fitness outside of bodybuilding.

Did you know that there are other forms of pullups? Did you know there are other fitness modalities besides bodybuilding, such as gymnastics, olympic lifting, etc? This person is doing a butterfly kip, which is different than a strict pullup. The purpose of this type of pullup is not to add muscle mass. But that does not make it stupid or worthless. It's simply something you do not understand or have any interest in doing, therefore you make fun of it. This guy can probably do 20+ strict body weight pullups easily. However he's doing a circuit workout for time, so a strict pullup is much slower and uses more energy. This style of pullup is about speed and efficiency.

CrossFit did not invent the kipping pullup. It is a gymnastics movement. CrossFit didn't invent anything, it only borrows from all types of fitness. So when you make fun of a kipping pullup, you're only mocking gymnastics itself. This type of pullup is done for high intensity anaerobic workouts, so that a person can perform more work in less time.

I like Crossfit but I found that GIF funny as hell hehe

You know who invented the kipping pullup? Greedy shoulder surgeons

There are much better ways to get an anaerobic workout than to risk injury and "perform more work in less time". That in itself is the crux in most CF discussions as it is set against time and is taking movements that should not be done as quickly as possible, but rather as precise as possible.

I agree. One of my chiropractors (who trains at the local Crossfit box) is completely against kipping pullups for this reason. The shoulder is a very complex joint, very prone to injury. Anything that's done with the shoulders should be done with utmost attention to form. I don't think kipping pullups should be done by just anyone, if at all. Asking for trouble at some point.

I agree with you guys on some of your points. Of course kipping pullups can be dangerous or put your shoulders at risk. Any movement in fitness when done incorrectly or without prper attention to form will be dangerous. It's kind of funny to me that people like to use the argument that kipping pullups are "so dangerous" on the shoulders, yet 10x as many people are injuring their shoulders from heavy bench press every week around the U.S. Yet no one argues against the bench press because it's well known that the bench press is a great lift and many people simply over do it.

The kipping pullup is just the same. There is a right way to do it and a wrong way. When you relax your muscles at the bottom every time and let it become a falling motion that places all the force now on your ligaments, you are going to eventually get injured. The right way to do it is to control your body through space with your lats, rear delts etc, and let the force stay on your pulling muscles. There are hundreds of crossfit Games athletes who have been doing kipping pullups for 5-10 years without any form of injury. I've done them myself weekly for the past 3 years and my shoulders feel better today than they ever have. So I agree that this type of movement is not for just anyone, because it is an advanced pullup variation. An athlete should be able to perform 10 strict pullups before learning the gymnastics kip, and be able to perform at least 10 gymnastics kipping pullups before learning the butterfly. It should always be taught in progression. And if there is a CrossFit gym out there that emphasizes moving fast over proper form, then that is simply a terrible gym that shouldn't even be in business. There are many incredible crossfit gyms that emphasize proper technique over everything else, which is the way it should be done.

There is a right way and wrong way to do everything :-)

You're pretty small, you don't have much clout with your arguments.

All solid points man. Thanks for taking the time to write all that up. I'm not sure how anyone can actually (logically) disagree with what you're saying.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I'm just tired of ignorant people who love to judge things they clearly don't understand in the least. I see more dumbass meatheads at the globo gym I train at doing stupid **** than I ever see dumb things at the crossfit gym I train at...but does that mean I think bodybuilding is stupid? Of course not.

All forms of fitness are great, and there are people pushing the boundaries of human potential in seriously impressive ways all across the board. Whether it's bodybuilding, powerlifting, Olympic lifting, gymnastics, CrossFit, Triathaletes, Strongman...it's ALL ****in cool. Just find one you are passionate about And give it your all. But don't be a judgmental ******* about something else.

All wise words. I wish more people had the mentality and then there may not be these invisible barriers put up. People miss out on a lot of fun things when they hold back from trying things that are out of their comfort zone.

I find so many good lulz at globo gyms, but I get nothing but humbled at Crossfit boxes lol... it ain't easy that's for sure...

I think I've provided some lulz when I used to powerlift at a Crossfit box here though. I used to do 5/3/1 w/ periodization bible assistance, and occasionally did super sets with loads of volume at the end. Apparently some people thought it funny and it bothered them that I wasn't training strictly for strength and performance. They were always snide, called me 'pretty boy' because I also trained for aesthetics. Funny thing was that I used to lift heavier than them too. The one thing Crossfit definitely doesn't need are the elitist attitudes that a good lot of them have. It's ok to be elitist, but respectful, not condescending. Not that you are, but I've encountered so many who are and I feel like the culture perpetuates it somewhat.

To dumb to see the irony I guess?

Lol now I see why you're incapable of seeing the point here.

My whole argument has been about not judging an entire fitness sport because a couple of dumbasses are abusing it. There are dumbasses in all of them: bodybuilding, crossfit, powerlifting, etc. And you can bet that if I ever see someone doing something stupid like passing a thrusters bar back and forth, I'm going to say "stop being dumbasses, you're going to get injured". There's nothing judgmental about calling someone out for being irresponsible and stupid. They're going to get themselves or someone else hurt if you don't.

Being a judgmental ******* means you now assume that everyone who does crossfit is a dumbass too. And you go around forums posting meme's to put down anyone whose involved in it :-)

It sucks that the forum is always broke now, or I'd rep you the 8 million points I accumulated and no longer see.

Lol I work at a "globo gym" dip****. I've worked there for years. I only use that term because it's easier to say than "conventional gym". There's dozens of types of gyms, Globo gym is the term people use when they're referring to big franchise gyms like Golds or 24hour. I love my globo gym and I want to own one someday.

It's pretty obvious you're the only person whose Butthurt here. I don't see anyone else posting meme after meme dude

Agreed dude. I work @ a cross fit. But I power lift and body build. I am looked down on sometimes. Its funny. Plenty of ways to skin a cat!

This is a far better example of Crossfit than the ones that were posted in here lol:

Bet most people on this forum can't snatch over 300 pounds.

I'm not a fan of snatches one bit. Now if we're talking squats and DLs I'm in...
