Shakes are actually food. Whey and casein are protein from milk, and being an animal protein, they are complete proteins, with all of the essential amino acids. Whey is one of the highest quality proteins available and is easily digested. It's also cheap if you know the best sources to get it from. No one said to use shakes instead of "real" food, you use them as a supplement, an easy way to get more protein.
 
A beefy hamburger has done me more good in my bulk than protein powders ever have . I'd make steak after every lift instead of shakes and got the best strength and muscle building results in my life. Yes there are other factors to account for but that was my main protein intake after lifts.

The measurable difference in which has done you better is so slight you wouldn't be able to tell with out a lab study. Studies ALL show whey after a workout is superior to food. Overall daily protein is more important but whey certainly will do you better post workout . But not by much.

I simply trust my steak more than most proteins to be honesty.
 
I gained the most weight when i stopped having more than 1 scoop of protein a day and focused on food
 
There are too many factors for a one size fits all formula. Whatever gets you through the night...
Also the pocketbook comes into play. Good quality meats can get pricey while there are good deals on protein all the time that will last longer than those 3 to 5 steaks for the same price.
The key is whatever works for you, do it and keep slinging iron.
 
Fair statement , a lot of proteins out there are not treated properly ! Good point
I was unaware until I read an article about it on AM, but I'll take my steak until I have funds to stock up on some PES select. Very trustworthy from everything I've heard and seen
