I don't think it's a question of one being better than the other. Some machines might be better than free weight alternatives. I prefer machine rows over barbell rows for instance. The ROM is generally better & I can move more weight. In my mind that makes them better.
I like to mix machines and freeweights in all of my exercises. I love to do Barbell Incline Press but when it comes to flat bench I prefer the Hammer Strength Flat Press. I enjoy the hard squeeze, elongated contraction that I am able to hold and the control of the movement with the Hammer Strength Flat Press
