Are dairy products bad for you?

Pasteurization kills the lactase in raw milk, which is the enzyme that breaks down lactose. If you lack this enzyme, you are lactose intolerant. Raw milk or supplementing with lactase MAY help with the digestion of milk.

Not everybody is lactose intolerant.

Some people are allergic to casein. Some are not.

If you are neither lactose intolerant or allergic to casein, then milk IS NOT an allergen.

As far as "bloat" goes. That's also a personal matter. "Smoothness" is not the same thing as "bloat."

Talk about pissing into the wind.

This is going nowhere fast. Thanks for all who participated but this should be closed. This is getting re-****-ulous now.

If you like milk, buy it all from your local store and store it in your basement for Pete's sake. This thread is starting to sound like "chocolate has anti-oxidants so I eat chocolate".

I do not care if you drink milk and you are not allergic or if you drink milk and it gives you a buzz, if you drink milk you will NEVER become as ripped as you would be without it.
PERIOD.

There is a reason why some of us prep winning contestants for shows and the rest of you compete on your own, drink milk and loose. GO FOR IT!

i agree, if ur getting ripped, or prepping for a contest , milk has no room in the diet. if ur bulking and want the extra calories and dont need that completely sharp look off season...milk is fine. i wouldnt drink a ****ing truck load but a glass with breakfast or with a shake cant hurt

I have a popsicle headache. I quit. Milk rocks! I am going to go bang a bottle at the store.

That was my biggest ass ache with your posts Marco Weasel.

I AM NOT LACTOSE INTOLLERANT. I CHOOSE NOT TO DRINK MILK BECAUSE I LIKE BEING LEAN AND RIPPED......AND SORRY Y'all, all those "old timers' you bring up to make your point who drank milk are considered smooth by 80's, 90's and 2K standards. So when you bring them up you actually make me spit out my ice water because you prove my point with an exclamation point.

Yes, but you can also jerk off with your self described huge tool ( or, for the rest of us, have sex with our partners) and that works as well too and you can stay ripped.

i agree with rike here.

but i must interject this: a tolerance to milk/dairy is actually a genetic mutation. people who are lactose intolerant are actually "normal" with their genetics. just thought i should say that.

also, to back up arnold with his "milk is for babies" quote, he is on to something. beer has more calcium in it, which ironically is absorbed into your system quicker, and more efficiently than milk.

ok, i've said my peace

also recommend a book called Dangerous Grains.. I'm not a freak and I don't advocate to avoid these foods.. but it's interesting the science behind the addicting nature of dairy and glutens

Indeed, I have talked to my doctor for some length about gluten foods. Supposedly, his autistic patients have seen great improvement in their conditions by avoiding these certain foods.

I don't use dairy until post work out protein shake. I don't care how big I wanted to get no way I could give up chocolate. Never go against the Govenator!

This is so true. At the gym I train at, we advocate the Paleolithic diet (caveman diet essentially). We have so many success stories, but the one I'll leave you with is this:

One of our athletes had psoriasis, in a pretty severe case, all of his life. He was embarassed about it, and fought it all throughout the years. He had a dozen doctors, and has gone on even more perscriptions throughout his life, but to no avail. Keep in mind, psoriasis is an autoimmune disease.
After he started with us and adopted the Paleo diet, it dissapeared. Not exaggerating one bit here - within two weeks it was gone. About a month or so later of living free of psoriasis for the first time in his 25+ years, he goes out on a camping trip with his buddies. Throws down some junk food (hotdogs with buns, chips... gluten), and sure enough, it comes BACK. He gets back to the gym the next week, back on the Paleo diet, and it dissapears once again. Hasn't been of Paleo since, and it hasn't came back since.

Although we might "feel" alright eating certain foods, we can't "feel" internal inflammation. Certain foods cause this silent inflammation, one of those being gluten and any sort of grain product, as mentioned, and the other is unfortunately dairy products. They are the root of so many auto-immune diseases. When you think about it, food is fuel. It is what our body LIVES off of. You give it things it can't process naturally, and there will be consequences/side effects. Food is like a drug.

To each, their own. But from a health standpoint, you will simply be healthier without dairy. Not trying to start any arguments here, or whether or not it's worth the "trouble" to give up dairy, but that's my advice and what I live by.

As to the whey protein question - it is still dairy. Here's where health and performance go in two different directions. Whey protein is derived from milk factions, so yes it's dairy. BUT, it is the most effecient source of protein to digest post-workout... performance. Post-workout, it's alright in my book to go after that protein shake if you're really looking for that performance edge. But a simple meal consisting of a lean source of protein and some starchy carbs (I go with sweet potatoes), will be right up there.

You know what? I was just being nice. I still think my Dad can take your Dad.

Actually, I was only being nice, too. My dad rotted away from pancreatic cancer when I was on my second tour in Iraq in 2006 so your dad could kick my dad's ass/corpse. You win again. It is all cool. When I got home and found out I took my hard feelings to Afghanistan and let loose on some SOB's for a tour there.

now that we had fun today, when I get called back to "where-ever", Afganistan, Iran, N. Korea, ????? I will have a laugh thinking of me and you going back and forth over nothing. Thanks man. It gets me through the tough times! Peace!

(but milk still sux and will give you titties)

Oooh RAAH! Semper Fi!

Sorry to hear about your Father. My apologies.

ok, i've said my peace

You are aware that his baby comment was a joke and that he actually did drink milk. Right?

i do realize that. i just thought i would say so. but also, i could see why he would choose to not drink beer as well. i have noticed an increase in gains, easier digestion, etc. when not having much dairy at all. my body can barely handle a serving of yogurt without goin awol.

regardless of my rambling, i know he said it as a joke.

Interesting conversation.
My respiratory/sinus issues completely went away when I stopped drinking normal milk.
I tried some of the grassfed raw milk a friend had and it caused no problems but its hard tio acquire where I live. I'd have to drive halfway across the state to get it.

I will be getting the dangerous grains book. I usually stick to oats but on a saturday I will knockoff a box of Total or Lucky Charms in two sittings.

A good idea would be a human breast milk analogue.

Explain this to me, because I'm having trouble seeing the reason for this.

Are you saying that steroids are actually safer than milk, or something to that effect?

Before steroids, BB's drank even more milk than they do today. It was a staple, ffs.

No not all. Let me give you another example. People "on" have a different set of rules than people who are not. For example they can get away with eating more food without getting fat and can get away with training harder without risk or overtraining.

If you don't mind, what were your specific issues? Congestion or Runny nose?
Asthma? etc etc

We miss you over here Rike!!! Come on back..., and take my spot. You bring the chocolate cake, I'll provide the milk!
As far as dairy, I drink it and eat it because I LIKE IT! Keep everything in proportion, and lift hard!

Have had asthma since I was a child.
Its gone. Have not had congestion or cough with phlegm either.
And my bronchitis is gone.
The doc told me that strangely enough that my lung inflammation was gone and
thought I was on some new experimental drug.

The only time I might cough is from exhaust fumes and dust and thats just temporary.

Cannot say this will work for everyone but a great friend who is a vegan got me on this different foods kick.
Organic food is expensive.

There are many people out there that have allergies, sensetivities, hypochondiacs, as well as gullible conspiracy theorists out there. If one focuses on those and ignores those the large percentage of people who both love and thrive on dairy and grains then that is just plain naïve! If the product bothers you personally then fine, this does not mean it's bad for everyone. Lobster for example gives me deathly painfull cramps & diarrea while others around me have orgasms, almost literally! I could publish a study stating how lobsters and shriimps etc. eat shark and whale Turd therefore it is bad for you. Let's grow up people! This is the age of gullibiliy and the me, me, me era! Dairy and grains are fantastic foods for a large percentage of the population. If that's not you, OK fine, don't eat them! Go eat some lobster then!

How old are you? I had bad allergies and asthma as a kid that seemed to resolve during college. Over the last year or so (30 yo now), the sinus congestion has ruined sleep patterns and I suspect some asthmatic symptoms returning as well. (allergy shots have been a waste of time fwiw, 7ish months in so maybe it'll get better???) Just curious and looking at all the angles I suppose

I am 29. Most of my sicknesses came when I was in my childhood, teens and early twenties. A few years ago when I got introduced to the whole organic thing and avoiding certain foods, a lot of the issues resolved themselves to a certain extent. On occasional cheat days some of the symptoms do come back slightly.
For me its a long term experimentation to see what my body can stand and it cannot.

In your case as you said you might come out on top without needing anything. Your body might be resetting itself as far as immunity goes or cleaning out toxins or something.
Especially with the timing you getting better during college years.

Oh and some of the natty test boosters, beta-a and creatine seemed to bring my symptoms back as well so I have to navigate around that as well.

Which ingredients do u suspect in test boosters to be the culprit? I've found that mucana and coleus are absolutely out for me with GI issues. I've never noticed that any supplement has affected my sinus issues one way or another though. Also, food allergies have all tested out negative for me though
