Ok, I have a compaq laptop, with vista OS!
I have had this prob before were the CD/DVD is not detected an I cant even open it; I fixed this prob by deleting lower filter in registry blah blah blah.

Now, it doesnt work again!!

Can someone please help because now I am lost :(!!

What model? Does it have the pinhole to open it manually?

Reseat CD assembly and refresh device manager? Unless its a known issue in Vista, thats the basics for hardware or its actually defective.

I wouldn't put anything past Vista though and could actually be a software issue specially if a registry hack helped in the past.

Reseat CD assembly and refresh device manager?

What does that mean^^^?

Yes, I can open manually, which does nothing but allows me to open an close it lol.. Still not detected..

Reseat the DVD caddy. Most laptops have a caddy that houses the CDROM which connects the bus to the actual cd-rom. Sometimes pins get bent or its obvious its defective..Its a long shot, but you never know and I dont know how old the laptop is. Usually when the cdrom device doesnt show in 'my computer' its because the cdrom is defective or turned off in the bios.

Check the device manager. Right click on 'my computer', click 'manage'. goto device manager and see if its listed under optical drives.

Restart your system, go into the Bios. Most likely, F12, F10 or DEL depending on model. Check system info, see if it 'sees' it there. Report back!

So to reseat, I will open my laptop?
It is 2 years and a few months old.
Will restart in a few.. Again lol..

Here's the Hack you were referencing if you wanna try this again:

Click Start
Click All Programs.
Click Accessories, and then click Run.
Type regedit, and then click OK. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Exit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

I already tried to do that again.
The filters were still gone when I checked.

Flip the laptop upside down. Check in the vicinity of the Cdrom. There may be a screw, or a thumb slide or both.

Basically, its like the old Nintendo games..remember youd pull the cartridge out and blow or clean the connectors? :D

Lol, that easy?
Ya, there is a screw under CD drive.
I just unscrew and pull CD drive out without cracking open entire laptop shell?

I dont know enough about Vista. Our hospital uses XP and now Win7 so anything Vista is beyond me. I can only reference from forums unfortunately and not experience. I ran you through the basics though. That may be an actual defective piece of hardware. Ive seen cdroms last for 10 years, Ive seen others last as little as 1-2 yrs. It is possible. The hardware is cheaper these days, granted more affordable but quality's been compromised for sure.

Its important to know if the bios 'sees it'. If the bios doesnt see it, most likely defective. If it does and Vista doesnt show it, then it could be related to that hack. Are you updated fully, ran a virus/spyware scan?

Can I get into bios without restart?

The HP site has the same referenced page from Windows

It says to update the firmware though as you may have corrupt drivers.

You might be able to try 'Last known good configuration' upon bootup. While booting up, hit F8 do it before the Vista screen shows up. Use last known config..thats worked sparingly for me.

Id follow the above link because it seems to be a 'known' issue. There is a 'fix it' icon in there you can try too..

Good Luck man..I gotta hit the sack!
