Ammonia smell in urine

I've recently been noticing an ammonia smell in my urine mainly after I work out. If I piss after I workout or an hour afterwards I really notice it. Later in the day I don't. It's not fruity like ketosis.

Have you guys had this? I noticed also one morning that I smelt it after cardio. Reading online that's pretty common and the theory is you are out of glycogen so the body starts to use protein. The smell comes from that.

The urine thing worries me a little. I eat 5-6 meals a day. I weight about 235 and take in about 200 grams of protein and probably about the same and maybe 150 grams of carbs on days I don't work out.

Should I worry about this?

Thanks...

How much water are you drinking? Your diet totals are fine. If you aren't drinking enough water, you get dehydrated and your piss gets strong and funky. 1.5 gallons minimum. For my AM cardio, i like to drink about 32oz when I get up while I get my crap together for work and the gym. Then I refill my 32oz bottle with extend and have at the cardio or my workout. I usually mix 3 scoops xtend in a full bottle, and as I drink it down, will continue to add more water to dilute it a bit. So I probably drink at least 1.5 liters at the gym during any workout.

My goal for the day is to drink a minimum of 4 32oz bottles of water a day, plus I have a 16oz PreWO with xtend and vasocharge, plus any other I drink at home, usually 1-3 32oz cups worth, plus protein shake if I have one. And yes I piss all day, b/c right now I have a desk job due to a broken hand. Normally I workl outside for telephone company in a moving sauna with no ac. So I get my 4 liters in during my 8 hour shift, then add everything else. Fluids with shakes and/or teas count also, I don't drink hardly any sodas b/c they act as a diuretic.

It's pretty much *supposed* to smell like ammonia, dude - just make sure you're drinking at least a half-gallon of water a day ('dilution matrix')

Thanks guys. youngandfree, I am going to try out the xtend and see how that works. I probaby am dehydrated I know I don't drink nearly enough water. I mainly drink green tea all day and 1 cup of coffee in the AM.

BodyWizard, I know it's made up of ammonia but it's such a different smell after my workout it just made me worry a bit. I'm gonna up the agua for sure.

It's funny because the rest of the time it smells fine. Not that I walk around smelling my piss or anything LOL!

How much do you drink during your workout? You sweat most of it out, so when you don't replace the water, your piss is more concentrated.

How much green tea do you actually drink each day? How much water did you actually drink today? Green tea and coffee have caffeine which can be a diuretic.

Your burning protein instead of carbs resulting in build up of ammonia due to the fact that your kidneys can not handle it. Very common in diabetic ketoacidosis. I'd back off the protein and start taking af lgutamine 5 grams 3-5 times a day to help scavenger the ammonia. You are basically starving your self on with the amount of exercising you are doing. No wonder you smell like ammonia. Same thing happen to me i smelled like ammonia when I sweated when competing. It was my body burning off protein and stressing my kidney,

When you were competing, do you mean BB show? That makes perfect sense if so. i just don't think he is in the same situation. I agree that he is burning protein. He just needs to drink more water to keep the kidneys flushed. When you were competing, more water isn't exactly an option.

Good post by the way.

More water is not the answer in his situation as I was drinking 3 gallons a day at that time. I was undereating and overtraining to much and protein break down is not what ones want. IF he is taking fat buners this can be adding more stress to the kidneys as well. More so this could be an indicator of problems in his ammonia detoxication (AKG depletion would result in this). Glutamine is an amino acid scavenger.

So, my total calorie intake is right around 2200 calories. I am trying to cut up and I am also adding in about 30 minutes of cardio 3 times a week in the evenings.

I hate to add more carbs so, would adding more protein help this? If I am buring my own protein would adding protein help? I will start taking Glutamine also. Thanks for the info. I am thinking if I just drink something like a protein drink during my workout that might help.

The OP did say he knows he doesn't drink enough water. If he knows that ne needs to drink more, then he should start there. You were drinking 3 gallons, but the OP isn't.

Yep nailed it. Its tempting to go all protein and veg (Atkins diet) and cut the carb but when your burning protein - it smells. Low GI carb is good, although you guys like high GI like white pasta.

Oh get creatinine levels checked if this has been long term. If your taking creatine though don't bother - no point.
