Americans coming up short
WLS

June 19, 2007 - New research shows that Americans are coming up short.
In fact, we are the shortest population in the industrialized world.

Since the colonial times, Americans were the tallest people in the world.

The Netherlands is now the world's tallest country.

In Denmark., men average 6 feet, while American men average 5'10.

Researchers say the Dutch health care system might take better care of children when they are young.

That's when most growing takes place.

Another reason might be poor diet in the US.

Overeating can cause children to produce too much growth hormone too early and stop growing at a younger age.

Personally I think the amount of Latin American immigrants in the US also got your average height down.

I'm 6'4 and Dutch :D

If you ain't Dutch you ain't much :p ;)

Where do they get 5'10" from? In order to get that you have to ignore the Latino and Asian population.

Average height of white adult males in US is 5'10.1"
Average height of black adult males in US is 5'10"
Average height of Mexican Americans is 5'6.8"

Average height of adult males in the US is 5'9.2"

Average height of adult males in the UK: 5'9"
Average height of adult males in Spain: 5'8.2"
Average height of adult males in France: 5'9"
Average height of adult males in Canada: 5'8.5"
Average height of adult males in Japan: 5'5.2"

Ok so explain again how we are the shortest of "the industrialized world"? We're actually still among the tallest. The Scandanavian, Germanic, and Slavic nations are taller. That's about it. Honestly I doubt we were ever taller than them.

It is indeed strange if you look at all the other countries which are industrialized. I have no idea on what study abc has based this news item. Just thought it was funny to tease a bit.

Also, although genes, food and health care system all play a role in achieved height, I definately think in the end genes play a bigger role than the others.

They did mention that the American diet might have an effect. They said it somehow manipulated us to stop growing at an earlier age. 2-3 inches isn't important unless you're playing basketball.
