i have read some things about different test/libido boosters and products for increasing serotonin levels. I was wondering if you mix these is that safe? I have problems with PE at times probably due to being stressed out and going threw depression for awhile. I was thinking of taking something like 5htp or something along those lines to help raise serotonin levels. At the same time i would like to keep the libido up to par. Heard some good things about sustain alpha, aspire, paravol. I also read some anti depressants lower libido. Would 5-htp lower libido? But my main question is if i mix these two different supplements what will it do? any help would be great thanks.

any input as to why your saying not to use a product like 5htp? just curious.. i did alot of reading on it and have seen more positive things than negatives. just wondering if its ok to mix the two supps...

I would not use any products that messed with serotonin or dopamine unless I talked to a doctor. It is really a bad idea if there is any chance you have a depression issue.

i definetly have been in a depression for awhile. i dont have health insurance and dont really want to be prescribed an ssri. .i thought more natural stuff like 5htp was a good alternative and wasnt very risky. but you guys r saying its wrong? from what ive read in other posts , its not that bad but i would love to know WHY you guys think it is a bad idea?

If you have a depression condition then you already have problems with serotonin it is not wise to mess with stuff like that with something you have no clue if it will help or hurt. This is a question for a doctor.

While I agree this requires one to proceed w/ caution n selectivity, talking to a MD isn't necessarily the best way to make an informed decision about whether or not to use natural supps for these issues...most MD's have very limited training n education in nutritional therapies and approaches. They may also be very bias towards the use of natural/nutritional approaches to treating this, or most any, issue...yet they'll have no problem suggesting a list of SSRI's to "mess with"- chances are . I'm no expert myself, N I'M NOT saying don't see a doctor... but I can attest from my own personal experience there are safe, natural supps to help elevate mood n focus n lessen tendency toward depression etc. Mucuna Pruriens/L-Dopa is one example of a natural supp like this, that does affect- and yield benefit- via the dopamine pathway

One of the reason the FDA is looking at everything as hard as they are is people with medical conditions are using things they probably should not. It is your body if you want to mess with your brain chems when there mmay already be a problem more power to you but it can can more harm than good.

I totally respect where you're coming from- it's always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to these matters. And...you are completely correct- many, many people are using things they should not...namely the prescribed n OTC drugs the FDA approves- they are toxic- period. I'm not saying they are all gonna kill you lol but they are a disturbance to the body n cause imbalance n disease. The FDA is in the pockets of the drug companies so deep it's not even funny. The FDA is taking a hard look at all the herbs n nutraceuticals etc that are helping people cuz they are a threat potentially to the ridiculously profitable sales of patented drugs. A naturally occurring substance with medicinal benefits is a threat to be stamped out in their (drug corp's, FDA, FTC) eyes- it can't be patented. So many people have become dead n/or sick from so many drugs it's obscene (not even talking misuse- but "proper" use), but as soon as a few incidents occur here n there from use/misuse of natural substances the FDA n media goes ape- it's their "chance" as they see it. The OP is saying he is experiencing frustrations with mental n sexual health, the herb I mentioned- helps with BOTH (it benefits the body systemically, n is recognized for particularly aiding these functions), safely. Will it work for everyone, of course not, but one does not significantly risk their safety/well-being by trying it out...*IMO* that is. When trying out SSRI's, you are undoubtedly gambling with yourself n your health, n use of these substances haven't been observed for hundreds to thousands of years by practitioners n users as many herbs n the like have

This is why I suggest not messing with it without a doctors knowledge. Messing with brain chemical that may already be a problem is not wise IMO.

Word. 5-htp is an man-isolated compound, n it hasn't been used/studied that long, relatively at least. It can effectively increase raw seratonin supply, n yes- while that can potentially benefit someone, it can also easily cause dangerous complications as you pointed out in a major way there. Going back to the OP, he could take a test-booster containing components such as Mucuna, n raise mood etc while boosting his test for BB purposes, killing 2 birds with one stone. I, like yourself, wouldn't tell him to take a test booster with 5-htp, or 5-htp standalone (even though I've tried 5-htp myself with no problems- but it's not something I chose to continue use of- actually my pre-workout right now though, JP8, contains a small amount lol)

hghpro has Mucuna pruriens (l-dopa)

M. pruriens has been used as an effective aphrodisiac. It is still used to increase libido in both men and women due to its dopamine inducing properties. Dopamine has a profound influence on sexual function.

In other words, hghpro should not be taken by pembroke unless his dr says it's ok... lol :P

In fact I let my doctor know everything I am taking.:)

your dr probably asked if you could get him a good deal ;) on the hghpro

Though I must add...how many people active in bodybuilding n the like fall into the list of contradictions you provided?? How does the OP? Doctors hand out **** like candy that would make 5-htp look like vitamin C everyday

There are a fair amount of BBers that have depression. Also let us not forget that not everyone here at AM is a true BBer. We have a lot of people looking for a quick fix solution many of these people have alot of conditions.

Just like with supps research everything you put in your body before you do so including anything a doctor may give you.

A good doctor will not just hand out depression drugs. Alot of people with depression can do well without meds if they get proper treatment. I am not for or against the use of supps or meds just be damn sure it not going to make a condition worse.

Def, I find BB/exercise to be a great weapon against depression, many people who have dealt with and/or have tendency toward any type of depressive or anxious state discover this and use it to their benefit. Furthermore yes, there are still going to be BB'ers etc who still deal with depression despite this. Perhaps meds don't get handed out per se by competent doctors, but it is pretty simple/easy to waltz in and get on meds, n it not often that medicated folks get the needed amount of actual therapy etc. I lean towards being against meds in general, n I firmly believe there are supps out there that provide help more safely/healthfully than meds- but ultimately I 100% agree with you that the utmost caution should be employed not to adversely affect an existing condition

This thread is old as hell, but if pembroke is honestly going to compare the side effects and potential dangers of psychiatric drugs like SSRIs to to 5-htp he's obviously unknowingly become a pawn of the pharmaceutical companies and his doctor's vernacular. The truth of the matter is just because there are suggested mechanisms to many of the psychiatric drugs out there, doesn't mean we really know much about them. I'd much rather someone potentially add a precursor to serotonin, than block reuptake with a guessed dosage. Apparently this guy has never heard of Vioxx or any of the other hundreds of drugs the FDA approves each year that are removed because of dangerous implications. The fact of the matter is, the FDA doesn't refuse to approve supplements because they don't all have scientific, placebo controlled studies backing them, they don't approve them because there isn't any money to be made off of them. I personally am tired of people trying to prescribe me treatment for depression that could potentially exacerbate my problem (suicide is a potential side effect in pretty much all psychiatric medications). The truth is doctors don't know for sure if low serotonin levels is causing your depression, depression is a symptom, not a disease in itself. Low test causes depression, low serotonin causes depression, low dopamine causes depression, anemia causes depression, hypothyroidism causes depression, inadequate nutrition causes depression, low vitamin d levels causes depression, illness can lead to depression, gastrointestinal disease can lead to depression. The point i'm trying to make is, if you think low serotonin levels could be causing your depression, why not try a supplement that will raise serotonin with much more subtelty than an SSRI to find out if it that is truly the issue. However, you also have to address why you have low serotonin levels in the first place unless you want to take 5htp or any medication forever. I for one, refuse to. Doctors preach all day long that they treat causes not symptoms, but in practice they don't live up to what they say.

I am not a fan of 5-HTP. Keep in mind that symptoms could get worse while using.

What i would suggest is take some St John's wort, as it is really scientficially proven to work and help with depression. As already mentioned it would be the best idea to go to a psychologist if having depression. If you absolutely do not wnat to do that, read about St John's wort and stay away from other supplements influencing your chemical brain system.

I am nearly finished with my psychology study so trust me.

50mg of 5-HTP and 600-900 mg of SJW taken for 8 weeks pulled me together through a very very terrible time in my life mentally.

I knew I was suffering anxiety and depression from the anxiety, until you have actual anxiety, you have no clue what clinical anxiety is...and I'd argue that you do not need a doctor to diagnose it...trust me, 6 weeks of being in 'fight or flight' mode, boughts of panic...its quite obvious.

My choices were, 1) see doc, get SSRI, take it for months to see if it worked..possibly needing to switch drugs 2-5 times to find one for me...or 2) Take 5-htp which turns into serotonin in order to assess if it was serotonin related...within days it was obvious it was, it totally brought me back over a few weeks, I tapered off, Im done with it...and I feel just fine (though the fear of anxiety coming back is always going to be buried in my head).

If I have a 'blue' day, I can just take 50mg, and be done with it again.

And to list the 'warning' on 5-htp and not list the longer 'warning' of SSRI's is just wrong.

If you want to mix these drugs with 5 htp then go for it. I am not a pawn for anyone. I only suggest you truthfully run everything by a doctor before adding more stuff to the mix.
