People have varying technical answers to this question, but IMO it's metabolites linger and lingerrrrr..mostly in the form of estradiol judging by the blood work that Supersoldier has done.

A friend of mine had a bad case of estrogen rebound months after his cycle. It could not have been anything else because it was his one and only cycle. Messed him up pretty bad - gyno, hot flashes, shedding - DR had him take some sort of menopause (sp) pill. I did not agree with that - and it did not help.
