13 Weeks to RPS Rawdawg Nats: Herder's PUUUGHE Comeback

I didn't take offense and didn't mean to sound argumentative so I apologize if I did. If I try to bulk/cut, it takes my body what seems like a month or two to "change gears" otherwise I make dirty gains or I just lose muscle depending if I am bulking or cutting. I have done them all and I find a nice solid recomp has the best results over time for me personally.

It's good to hear that you have found something that works for you, that's what this lifestyle is all about. Keeping an open mind and finding what works best for the individual.

Yeah no worries at all. Did not think you were being negative /argumentative. I'm sitting right now at 180 carb cycling, quite lean (maybe 8%) and I'm seeing a nice recomp effect as well... Definitely my diet, training, and the help of AP

8/7 Sport Practice

Warm-up: Agile 8 and Simple 6

Squats
Barxmillion
135x10
225x5
Then got into full gear. (Belt, wraps. Wraps basically just rolled on, no stretching) add commands (squat/rack)
225x3 singles
245x2 singles
275x3 singles

Everything was lightning fast. These are ready to go.

Bench
Barx12x thumbs on slicks, thumbs from slicks, pinkie just inside ring(narrow comp grip), ring on ring (current comp grip), max legal
135x10
185x5 then wrap wrists, add commands (bench, press, rack)
225x1
245x2 singles
275x2 singles

Everything fast as well. Brachialis still tender.

Cleans from 8" blocks
135,155,185 just coaching the brother

Deadlifts (working on getting so tight that the bar floats before I pull, then pull fast)
185 no problem
225 this is tough.

Good day. Feeling much stronger and faster. Buffetx2 will do that to you. Sticking to weights that don't kill me this week and next week, but I just can't stick to 40 or 50 percent. To me, 50%, 80%, and <90% are three completely different exercises. So not taxing myself with volume, but getting in some non-challenging reps wherever the weight falls.

Here's the video. Squats go 245,245,275. Bench 225,245,275 and the deadlift reps are with 225. You can see the weight start floating as I start my pull. I wanted to get myself down and in as tight as I could before I started.

I just watched THE CAGE 30 minute feature video on youtube about the Animal Cage. Pretty cool stuff. And, I'm in it for 5 seconds, at 29 minutes in. I look dazed and confused, like I'd smashed a case of beer the night before or something . . . oh wait . . . that's exactly what I did.

What's the animal cage?

It's an event that Universal Nutrition holds at the fitness expos, for the Arnold and Olympia. They do exhibition lifts, like Brandon Lilly's 755 beltless deadlift, or Eric Lilliebridge's 906 squat, Sam Byrd's 650 no hands squat, or one of Eric Spoto's many unofficial 700lb benches. I watched Ben Seath squat 500 for 15, it was crazy as hell. He buried every one and he drops as fast as anyone I've ever seen.

Just youtube search a powerlifter's name and Animal Cage. You'll see some cool stuff. Here's the 30 minute video that just came out:

We on tv!

Edit: I think they may live stream CAPO. I have no idea when since time zones are way off.

I saw that on the Cube facebook group! I'm going to have to do some figuring and watch the live stream. Hell, that sucker could be DAYS off! I've been out of the eastern time zone for a few hours in my life, I don't understand that international date line shyt!

I don't know if our sport is getting more popular, or if media is getting more comprehensive, but I don't mind.

Well, being that many guys are in shape now can do nothing but help. Takes away the stereotype. I'd say a little of both though.

Yea I've been watching the Lilly videos getting ready for this. This is what he has been talking about, getting USA up there with the rest of the world. Should be cool.

Yeah, Lilly looks a lot better in his singlet than he was a few months ago. I just saw that Sarychev is going to be there. He's incredible. If you guys haven't seen him, look him up. He's probably going to bench 700+ this weekend.

EDIT: ****, forget Sarychev, Big Benni is coming!

Yea man, Lilly is looking lean...for 300lbs haha. Seriously in some great shape now.

Definitely some monsters going to be there.

Just did the conversions. Apparently it starts at 6pm Eastern Friday and Saturday

My traps are sore as fu(k from those cleans from blocks. My brother gets tested in the hang clean for football in college, and I decided to throw something at him with no stretch reflex, to make it harder. It was a lot harder.

Working up to my bench opener today. I don't think I'm flaring my lats hard enough, so I'm going to work up and see if the new implementation will work for me, or if I should stick to what I've been doing. If I don't like the technique adjustment, I'll cut the jumps by feel, go back to my original technique, and do one more single at the weight I stopped at.

Put capsaicin rub on my brachialis, biceps tendon, and upstream and downstream.

I used way too much...

Note to self: Don't keep adding more waiting for it to kick in.

On another note, tonight was benchin with more emphasis on lat flare. It was subtle, and probably imperceptible to the tape, but I think it worked well.

Benchin!
Barxlots
95
135
185x12
225x3
275x1
295x1
315x1
335x2x1

And that was my day. I'm totally confident I'll hit 315 and 335 in a meet setting. Even 340. I think if all hell breaks loose, I could hit 340 7 out of 10 times. Not in the same session, of course.

Based on this, I'll open at 315 and take my second at 340 and my third could be anywhere from 345 to 365.

Feeling locked in on my bench. Squat I can't decide where to go after my 465 opener. 510 seems like a big jump, but I think if I keep my chest I could hit 525-535 on the day.

Deadlifts I'm just going to hit the ammonia until I'm blind, have someone lead me up to the bar, and tear its head off. I'm scared to death of them.

You're gona kill it big dog. Bench is looking beast.

Stay tuned for the vid and tell me what you think of the bar speed please.

Here we are:

315 was like butter with a hot knife, 335...knife wasn't warm, but it's butter vs. a knife :D

Edit: bar flew up with 315, traveled steady/good speed at 335 IMO

First 335 was good. 340 or 345 easy. You make me realize how stupid long my arms are lol.

Hahaha thanks buddy. We'll see how they do after squatting. I moved my hands out as per Paul Carter's "How to fix your Low Bar Squat" and there is definitely much less stress on the brachialis. If I miss my first or second squat with my hands out wide, I WILL forget about my bench press for the time being and bring my hands in to retake and make the lift. I think my brachialis will hold up just fine with the proper amount of capsaicin and a light week next week.

Just realized, was that momma herderdude holding a board? Pretty cool haha

Momma Herder in her jammies holding boards for the boys. Jordy went on to hit 245x4 for a PR after his board pressin. He doesn't quite yet have the upper back to get past 275, but he's hit 275 for a single four or five times. His best lift is the squat, he's hit 430 with no knee wraps, and his deadlift is 425 and 405x3 and he has no idea how to deadlift yet.

First 335 was good. 340 or 345 easy. You make me realize how stupid long my arms are lol.

The funny part is I read an article that gave limb lengths to correspond to deadlift styles, and it said I have long arms and a short torso for my height. Benching big and having a 30 inch inseam, I would have never thought that.

My arm length is all humerus, which makes for nice low touches on the upper abs and happy, healthy shoulders, but I do have troubles locking out when I bring my hands in, and I do have troubles off my chest with wider hands. Just stuff to work on.

Open at 320, 2nd 345, go for broke on the third. The 335 was just a tad slow for an opener IMO. I want the bar to f'ing to fly up on your opener, that way, confidence is up.

It would probably say my arms were stretched from hanging shortly after birth or something. Oh well. It's how I'm made so I just gota make it work. Not like my lifts suck or anything lol.

Yeah I brought my hands in a little like y'all suggested for my max and it felt okay but I can't even remember exactly which grip I used now cause I changed it pretty much every attempt.

Now that just sounds scary. I moved the whole way in to pinkies on the ring! that was a big step lol. But I will try going in more if you think it will help. I feel like my hands are going to be in over my chest though.

Watch Hoornstra, Misha Koklyaev, and KK. You're talking a 661, 507 easy, and 500+ bench. KK is a deadlifter's build kind of guy. You'll get so much stretch out of the bottom, it'll blast off of your chest. Napalm speaks the truth. That's what I'd be doing if my brachialis wasn't bending me over.

Ultrasound guided injection made my torn stupid fcking brachialis feel like a million bucks. Still a little weakness on that side but whatever ...

See, I have no idea what's wrong with mine, except that it hurts like hell to bench when I get close to my chest.

Ill do it gents. KK as in khan?

Konstantin Konstantinovs. You deadlift and don't know Konstantinovs? He pulled 939 with no belt, did a set of 50 pullups at 280, and does dynamic pullups against bands.

I thought you meant "King Khan" as that's what first popped into my head. Yes I know Konstantinovs, haha. Ridiculous. You gotta remember I'm still a young buck learning a lot of these guys though.

You'll get it. Just watch and learn as much as you can. You'll find guys built similar to you who move big weights. They're the ones you want to model yourself after. Like Chris Hickson. Tall as **** and a born deadlifter who pulled 8 on his 18th b-day and squats 7 and benches in the mid-to-upper 3s.

I think I'd be on my way to 7 right now if I hadn't messed my back up. I was doing 525@16. Definitely didn't help progress. I'll give him a look. I wish I was just born with the lilliebridge family genetics, lol. But I am a firm believe that lifting heavy is 10% genetic and 90% determination and what you make of it with training diet etc. I need to find someone shortish, with long arms and a short torso and long legs. Aka awkward.

Edit: you are right, I do have a similar build to hickson. He's definitely taller than me but very similar proportions.

It's all about the hard work, man. You have to remember, the Lilliebridge boys have been training for powerlifting for TEN YEARS. Dan Green became an overnight sensation after seven years of competing, and even the young phenom, 24 year old Dave Hoff, who will go down as the greatest powerlifter who ever lived when it's all said and done, has been training at Westside since he was 14 years old. He went from 400/300/400 to a 2965 total in March.

They still got good genes hahaha. I hate seeing guys who are built solid for PL, who lift and are happy enough with big numbers just because they are big. I know if they put in more work they could be even better. In a way I like being one of the smaller guys because I want to be hitting numbers like you and sean and some of the other guys of course.

I gotta get back to Strongman. I was checking up on my fellow competitors at this upcoming meet and there's a kid in the Junior 220 that will probably total about 1700. He has no powerlifting meet experience, but he's a national level strongman competitor. Also, that Graham Hicks hitting a gym total of 2100 and seeing Brian Shaw and Big Z's prowess in the powerlifts tells me that there's something big to be said about the way these guys train.

Absolutely. I forget who said it (wendler or lilly IIRC) but they said strongmen rep what PLs consider heavy/max weight.

poundstone has a pretty impressive pull, but he does weight like 350 lol. I can't imagine weighing that much. I know a few guys through a friend who are strongmen and they all have great PL #s as well. I'd love to strongman but I would be one of the smallest. Locally we just have a above/bellow 220 class.

Zydrunas was a well established PLer before he started competing Strongman.
