    my mom's family were very poor sharecroppers who didn't waste anything by necessity. i remember the outhouse with that big old sears and roebuck catalog for TP, and having to use the hand pump for water.. and now my wifes mom was full blooded cherokee so my wife learned a lot of the native ways...
